May 15, 1961 – Palmerston North, New Zealand
February 6, 2019 – Calgary, Alberta
David James Robertson, 57, of Calgary, Alberta, passed away on February 6, 2019, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Eldest child of Alden (Al) and Isobel Robertson, David was born on May 15, 1961 in Palmerston North, New Zealand. Upon returning to Canada in 1964, David’s family resided in Melfort, Saskatchewan where he completed high school in 1979. David met Joan in 1982 while studying Computer Science at the University of Saskatchewan. In 1984, David began his 34 year career with Petro-Canada (now Suncor) in IT services. The following year David and Joan were married and a few years later were blessed with two children, Heather and Ian.
David was a puzzle solver, both at work and in his personal life. A Senior Security Specialist – Infrastructure Security, David was always eager to evaluate new IT technology.A colleague called him “Magic Man” for his ability to identify and resolve technical problems. David also completed the stringent requirements for his CISSP certification in 2006 and maintained this certification until 2018. Ever vigilant about safety, David was a long term volunteer Fire Warden. He also sang in the Petro Canada choir.
David lived life as he rode in vehicles – always the driver, never really a passenger! Organizing, planning, and strategizing were David’s strengths. He was always willing to help people and loved to hear their life stories. David enjoyed surprises – both giving and receiving. David loved adventures of all kinds, and travelled to locations such as New Zealand, Africa, Mexico, Cuba, Jamaica, Dominican Republic, the US and Europe.
David’s many hobbies and interests included computers, photography, singing, playing guitar, camping, hiking, climbing, white water rafting, skiing, and golfing. He also played volleyball and slow pitch in the Petro-Canada recreational leagues, and volunteered as a leader when Ian entered the Scout program. Most important to David was his passion for cycling in the Ride to Conquer Cancer. As captain of Team 4 All for 8 years, David inspired many individuals to participate as rider, crew or fundraiser.
David was predeceased by his grandparents, Walter and Jean McDonald, and Lorne and Frances Robertson. He is survived by his wife Joan, daughter Heather, son Ian, parents Al and Isobel Robertson, sister Lesley (Blair), brother Trevor (Joanne), nieces Alyssa (Jeremy), Carlyn (Nick) and Cassidy, as well as loving in-laws, nieces, nephews and a host of long-time friends.
