Obituary of Susan ANAND

September 21, 1948 – Heage, England July 1, 2017 – Calgary, Alberta Susan beloved wife, mother and grandmother, passed away on July 1, 2017 at the age of 68 years. Sue was born in the small village of Heage, in Derbyshire, England. As a child she quickly became adventurous and independent, while excelling academically and finding a passion for art. As a teenager she blossomed into a beautiful, fashionable woman, ultimately meeting her equally fashionable husband, Brij. As Sue said, “it was love at first sight.” A son and daughter later completed their family. In 1982, Sue, along with her husband and children, moved to Calgary, Alberta to pursue a new opportunity. The transition from English life to Canadian life was slow for her, but over time Susan came to love her new community. In 1991, she started a career as an Administration Assistant in the Civil Engineering Department of the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Calgary. She purposefully retired early at age 58 to start her role as grandma when her first grandchildren Jacob and Benjamin were born. During her ten years of retirement, Sue and Brij saw the world, traveling to exotic locations like India, Kenya, Ireland, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, and Mexico. The couple purchased a summer home in West Kelowna, B.C. where they were introduced to a warm and receptive community and a new love of Okanagan wine. In her later years, Sue became an expert at spoiling her youngest grandchild, Olivia. Sue was a happy, caring, welcoming and kind person – she accepted everyone for who they are, and as they are. Sue would tell you that her passion was gardening; her family will tell you her legacy will be the strong, loving community she created around her. Sue will be dearly missed by all who knew her. Left to cherish her memory are her husband of 45 years Brij Anand; son Robert and his wife Tanya Anand; daughter Kate and her husband Mike Swartz; grandchildren Jacob Swartz, Benjamin Swartz, and Olivia Anand; sister Margaret Lodge (Englmann) and her family of Underwood, Nottinghamshire, England; and, more than a dozen brothers- and sisters-in-law across England, Kenya, and Canada. In accordance with Sue’s wishes, she will be cremated following a family funeral service. In addition, the family will host a Celebration of Life event at the Glencoe Club in Calgary (636 – 29 Ave SW, Calgary, AB), at 2 p.m. on Friday, July 14th, 2017. We will share wine, snacks, and stories in her honour. Everyone she knew and touched is welcome. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. Sue’s final days were spent at the Rosedale Hospice in Calgary, where her entire family was treated with the utmost compassion and care during her stay. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Rosedale Hospice #1245 – 70 Avenue S.E., Calgary, AB T2H 2X8 Telephone: (403) 284 – 5195.
