Lyn died peacefully at South Calgary Campus Hospital on April 9, 2017 a month before her 96th birthday. She was active and healthy for most of her life but found the last months challenging after a fall.
Lyn was born in Calgary to Mervyn and Elsie Johnston. She obtained her Bachelor’s degree in Education at the University of Alberta. After a brief career teaching in Bassano and Innisfail, Lyn became the women’s commentator at CFCN radio. After her marriage, she left work to raise her children, Shauna and Mervyn. When they went off to university, Lyn returned to work at the Calgary Philharmonic followed by a successful career at Francis Williams and Johnson Ltd. where she specialized in managing complex events such as the opening of Calaway Park, the opening of the Glenbow Museum and the 100th anniversary of the signing of Treaty 7 with the First Nations bands.
While teaching in Bassano, she met her husband Ned, who had arrived from the US to work in the oil patch. They lived in Calgary throughout their nearly seventy years of marriage and, over this time, formed many enduring friendships. They enjoyed entertaining, bridge, travel and hiking. Lyn was very involved in many community activities including Pi Beta Phi, Theatre Calgary and the Boys and Girls Club.
For the last seven years Ned and Lyn have resided at Garrison Green Retirement community. Lyn was predeceased by her parents and her daughter, Shauna. She is survived by Ned, Mervyn and his wife Diana, her sister Sybil, and her son-in-law, Peter, and their families. She is missed by her family and friends from across many generations. She was part of Calgary’s history.
