Obituary of David Whitney POGUE

February 14, 1929 – Toronto, Ontario March 26, 2017 – Calgary, Alberta Dave Pogue died peacefully at the Southwood Hospice, Calgary, on Sunday, March 26, 2017, after a great, long life and a courageous battle with cancer. Dave was born in Toronto, ON, and graduated from the University of Toronto with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science and Economics. After graduation, he moved to Calgary to begin his working life. He met his life-long partner, Adelle Pytlarz, on a fortuitous blind date. They married in 1959 and were blessed with three children. Dave began his professional career as a land administrator with British American Oil and later moved into the Human Resources area with Gulf Canada and then Syncrude Canada where he retired at the age of fifty-five. Retirement opened many doors for Dave. It provided time for his love of playing the piano and composing music. He went back to university to pursue his interest in languages and to study Russian. His generosity and devotion to the “underdogs of life” led him to numerous volunteer opportunities including helping immigrant families settle in Canada, and over thirty years delivering meals to the needy and elderly with Meals on Wheels. He was an active member of Corpus and St. Brigid’s, two Catholic communities committed to change. Dave is survived by Adelle, his wife of fifty-seven years; children and their spouses Jane and Peter, Bob and Laura and Ruth and Greg; grandchildren, Marc (Ayla), Mike, Scott, Luke, Ben, Sean, Sarah, Nick, Geoff (Suzanne), Cameron and Luna; nieces, Cathy and Barbara; nephew David; and numerous other relatives. He was predeceased by granddaughter Jill Joanna; brothers, Rolph and Robert; and his nephew Larry. Sincere gratitude and thanks to our very special friend Lyn for helping dad and caring for mom. To the beautiful nurses and caregivers from HomeCare, WeCare, the Palliative Home Care team, and the compassionate staff at the Southwood Hospice, we are eternally grateful.
