Upon graduation from high school he would work at various jobs in BC and Alberta only to return to the farm in the spring. Shirley generously gave his time to the local community associations of Lynnwood in Edmonton and Triwood in Calgary. He coached Little League baseball for over thirty-five years and then donated his time to the development of the senior’s slo-pitch league where he played until he was 85. Shirley was actively involved with the International Right of Way Association and was a local chapter President. He believed in professional standards for all landmen and assisted in the development of the curriculum at Olds College’s Surface Land Agent program.
