Mike was a hands-on Dad, volunteering with Scouts Canada for many years as a leader. Mike also canvassed for the Heart and Stroke Foundation and participated in many fund-raising activities.
Mike earned a degree in cultural anthropology at McMaster University and a B.Ed from the University of Calgary. He taught at Centennial High School and at Crescent Heights High School in Calgary, specializing in photography, computer science, animation, and social studies. Coaching high-school boys soccer brought him much joy, as did Computer Club.
Mike was an avid photographer, skier with AST1 certification, mountain biker, wine connoisseur, and foodie. He shared his great passion for the outdoors and photography with his boys. He had an artistic eye, especially behind the lens, and painting in watercolors. Some of his best times were spent playing guitar with his large circle of friends.
Mike mentored his sons and hundreds of students, and was a good and generous friend to so many.
Determination and fortitude were a part of Mike’s personality and aided him with coping with a difficult cancer diagnosis. He lived with courage and grace.
Mike will be greatly missed by his family, friends, fellow teachers, and students.
We are deeply grateful for OUR VILLAGE of helping hands and kind hearts. Thanks also to the dedicated palliative home care team and Southwood Hospice caregivers for their specialized care.
Our dog Kona was a constant companion to Mike and to all on this journey and we are thankful for his boundless energy and joy.
