Obituary of John Richard FARNHAM

November 23, 1928 – St. Stephen, Charlotte County, New Brunswick December 28, 2015 – Calgary, Alberta It is with heartfelt sadness that we announce the passing of John Farnham at age 87. John was born in St. Stephen, NB. The family moved to Bayside, NB about 12 miles away in January of 1934 at the height of the Great Depression by horse and sleigh. He went to a one-room schoolhouse until Grade nine then went to St. Andrews, NB to finish off high school in Grade 11. He worked for the Bank of Nova Scotia until 1948 when he joined the RCAF as a radar operator. In 1949 he re-mustered to aircrew and trained as a pilot from 1949-1950. In 1953 whilst flying a Trenton, Ontario-based B-25 Mitchell bomber on a training flight to Currie Field (Lincoln Park) Calgary. He gave a ride home from there to Camp Borden, Ontario to a lovely airwoman named Joan. In 1954 he married this girl Joan, the love of his life and they raised three wonderful sons, moved them from base to base across Canada until he retired from the RCAF in 1975 in Calgary. His family meant a great deal to him and he cherished greatly the many fond memories of them in various locations and doing different activities. During his career in the RCAF, John flew various aircraft in many different roles over most of the world. After retiring, he then flew corporate aircraft for MP Petroleum and Calgary Power (later TransAlta) until 1996 then flew private aircraft for pleasure until a couple of years ago. He enjoyed hiking, cross country skiing, walking and activities associated with aviation. As a boy he had always dreamed of being a pilot. He achieved this ambition and really loved flying. He was an “aircraft nut” in the true sense of that word, reading everything he could about pilots and flying. He is lovingly remembered by his wife, Joan; his sons Glenn (Lee Ann) of Stittsville, ON, Ross of Calgary, Scott (Connie) of White Rock, BC; sisters Shirley of Golden Grove, NB and Theresa of Fredericton; grandchildren Kristin (George), Shannon and Kira; and many nephews and nieces. He was predeceased by his parents Harry and Eva, a sister Elsie and a brother Paul.
