Patterson, Grant
September 18, 1971 – Toronto, Ontario
December 10, 2015 – Okotoks, Alberta
Grant Patterson beloved husband of Victoria of Calgary, passed away on December 10, 2015 at the age of 44 years.
Grant was born in Toronto, Canada and moved west to Calgary when he was 12. It was on the first day of grade 7 that Grant and Victoria met. Grant was an extremely motivated and hard worker. He gave 110% to his studies and his sports. Throughout his school years he was involved in most school sports. He would compete with his friends to be the best at those sports and with grades. In high school he discovered football and played for the Bishop Grandin Ghosts. He continued to play football for the University of Calgary Dinos. He was being scouted by the Canadian Football League but made the decision to stop playing football and concentrate on his studies. Grant acquired a Bachelor of Commence through U of C and then went on to attain his designation as a chartered account. He began his work career at Price Waterhouse Coopers and then moved into the Oil and Gas field working for a number of companies/banks such as Enron, UBS, Suncor, JP Morgan and finally Mercuria. He was a very valued employee and was known as a man who would get things done and get things done RIGHT.
Grant and Victoria dated in junior high, high school and university. If they had a break up it usually wasn’t for long and everyone around them knew they had a special bond. At age 21 they never broke up again and at 27 they were the last of their friends to get married so they did it on New Years Eve, December 31, 1998. At age 29 they were blessed with their daughter Tyra May and then at 31, they had a son Trey John. Grant was a wonderful father and husband. He put his family first at all times. He provided for his family so Victoria could stay home and raise their kids. He worked hard but he never missed dinner with his family. That was their special time each day to sit around the table and discuss what had happened during the school/ work day. Grant still was very active in the Calgary Flag Football league which he played in for 16 plus years with many of his good buddies. He loved playing with the guys and enjoying a beer or two afterwards. He then became very involved in his children’s sports. He would coach Tyra’s basketball team, he coached Sigma Football and helped with dry land training for Trey’s hockey. Despite not ever being a hockey player he tried to still be involved in Trey’s hockey however he could which landed him on the Lake Bonavista Breakers hockey board as well as working the score clock or music at the games. He even took adult learn to play hockey classes in order to try to keep up with Trey. He realized a few years back that he would never be able to keep up with his son. He was so proud of his children and their determination in their chosen sports and their studies. It broke his heart knowing that he won’t be here to see them grow up or to grow old with his wife. Grant’s battle with glioblastoma brain cancer began 15 months ago. He was a warrior and tackled 2 brain surgeries, radiation therapy, chemotherapy and a clinical trial with such bravery. He so desperately wanted to be the one to beat this disease. In fact while in the hospice he still wanted to fight. He was a man who never gave up. In the last few weeks he did the bravest thing he could and started saying goodbye to his wife, children, mom, sisters, extended family and friends. We will all never forget your words Grant and we will live our lives how you’d like us to live them.
Thank you to everyone who has helped Grant though this journey especially his doctors: Dr. Jacob Easaw and Dr. John Kelly at the Tom Baker Cancer Centre and Foothills Hospital. Without them, we would not have had the last 15 months. Thank you to all the staff at the Foothills Country Hospice for the wonderful care and concern you provided for Grant and his family. Lastly, thank you to all our friends and family who have stood beside us and helped in any way they could. Grant’s last wish was to create an army of support around his wife and children and you are all that army. God Bless.
Besides his loving wife Victoria, Grant is survived by his daughter Tyra and son Trey. He is also survived by his mother Kenora Duffin (Pat), sisters Wendy Prokopetz (Mike)and Kelly Howarth(Marc), mother-in-law Ann Larsen(Ben), brother-in-law Peter Chinnery, nieces and nephews Jenna, Lucia, AJ, Jarvas, Malick and Roman. He is also survived by many aunts, uncles and cousins in the Toronto area. He was predeceased by his father-in-law John Chinnery and his maternal grandparents Robert and Gloria Patterson.
