Obituary of Delia KELLY
KELLY, Delia (nee Delaney)
February 1, 1922 – Canteeny, Ireland
August 13, 2015 – Airdrie, Alberta
Delia Kelly beloved wife of the late Kevin Kelly passed away on Thursday, August 13, 2015 at the age of 93 years.
Delia was born in Canteeny, County Galway, Ireland. She left Ireland and moved to Canada where she lived in several prairie communities including Eston, Leader and Alsask, SK before moving to High River, followed by Penticton, B.C. and finally Airdrie, AB.
Delia and Kevin owned and operated a grocery store, which was a focal point in the small town of Alsask, SK. Their hard work and dedication to their business allowed them to support their family and all their endeavors. Delia lived for her children and in her later years one of her greatest joys was seeing her grandchildren and great-grandchildren at all their family gatherings.
Delia’s core strength came from her deep and enduring faith in God. This Faith and love guided her relationship with her family, and was also expressed by her support of community charities including Operation Eyesight, the Heart and Stroke Foundation, Alzheimer’s and numerous children’s charities.
Delia enjoyed sharing treats with her family. Her guilty pleasures included licorice, cheezies, Turkish Delight. Her afternoons were shaped by her three o’clock dedication to her favorite physician; Dr. Phil.
Delia’s most memorable trip was her journey home to Ireland after forty-five years of being away. Her homecoming was welcomed by her large extended Irish family. This reunion marked and enjoyed longstanding friendships.
Delia loved songs from Ireland and her favorite song was Galway Bay which brought back memories of home. She was an avid reader of everything non-fiction and kept herself informed of all current events. At special family occasions, a highlight of the gathering would often be Delia’s recitation of a poem she learned as a child and loved to recite, “Bright Little Jerry Malone”.
Delia is survived by her son Patrick and daughter-in-law Wendy of Regina, SK; her daughter Geraldine and son-in-law Keith Dow of Airdrie, AB; her son Gerard and daughter-in-law Leanne of Ladysmith, B.C. She is also survived by her four grandchildren, Erin and her husband Mike Symcox, Craig and his wife Megan Dow, and Gabriel Kelly and Daniel Kelly.
