Obituary of Severino ‘Sauve’ Peter DOZZI
December 28, 1932 – Copper Cliff, Ontario
July 3, 2015 – Calgary, Alberta
On a sunny Friday afternoon, with his son Bryan by his bedside, Peter Dozzi peacefully passed into his final journey.
A lifetime learner, Peter earned degrees from Queens University in Civil Engineering, a business degree from McGill University, and a Masters in Engineering from the University of Calgary.
Peter grew up in Copper Cliff, Ontario where hockey, baseball, and getting into trouble was the beginning of a great life. He started his career in Montreal working at Dominion Bridge, and it was here that he met his wife to be, Agnes O’Neill, and started their family. As a renowned bridge engineer, his work involved him in many notable bridges from coast to coast in Canada. One of his proudest achievements was Alberta’s first suspension bridge at Dunvegan, Alberta. While he was with Dominion Bridge, Peter, came back to Sudbury for INCO, and spent 6 months supervising the structural engineering aspect for the building of what came to be known as “THE SUPER STACK”. In 1970, Peter moved the family to Sudbury to work at INCO in their engineering department.
Following a brief appearance in Regina he finally arrived in Calgary. After nearly 25 years with Dominion Bridge, INCO and Fluor, Peter accepted the challenge to be a Professor at the University of Alberta. There he started up the program to teach Project Management in the Civil Engineering Department. Peter also taught this program at the Purdue University for three terms.
Peter used his talents in various ways. As a draftsman he designed homes and cottages, as an artist we can still enjoy his numerous paintings, and as a teacher he shared his knowledge with his students. Even in retirement, Peter remained active consulting, lecturing in China, India, Egypt to name a few, travelling, skiing, golfing, playing hockey and getting into anything that he found interesting well into his 70’s.
Peter will be dearly missed and forever loved by his wife of 55 years Agnes, and his children, Bryan (Lynne Weselowski), Karina Black (Reg) and Christina (Stephen Burns), as well as his grandchildren, Alex, Illyana, Sydney and MacKenzie. Peter also leaves behind his sister, Inez Caverson (Lino – predeceased) of Coniston, Ontario, and brother, Louis (Nancy) of Sudbury, Ontario and three generations of nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Pietro and Maria Dozzi and his brother, Delki (Melinda).
Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Bonaventure Catholic Church (1600 Acadia Drive S.E.) on Friday, July 17, 2015 at 1:00 p.m. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.
