Obituary of Doreen ORMAN (nee Cumming)

Doreen Orman, fondly known as Grammie to her grandchildren and many others, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 15, 2020 at the age of 94 years.

Doreen will be remembered as having the remarkable ability to see the best in every person. She was a pillar of strength and compassion, and was the beating heart of a wide and loving network of family and friends. Passionate about social justice, Doreen volunteered tirelessly through the YWCA over decades, fighting for the rights of women, children, and marginalized people throughout the world. Her achievements included the Governor General’s Award in commemoration of the Persons' Case, the Women of Distinction Award for Community Service,  twice president of the Calgary YWCA Board of Presidents, a board member of the Children’s Hospital Foundation, the Ann Northcote award for her outstanding contribution to the international work of the YWCA, and many others too numerous to mention. She was an active member of Knox United Church for more than seventy years.  Doreen was born in and grew up in Cayley, AB and moved to Calgary from her family’s farm in 1943. She married Jack Orman in 1946, and they lived in Sunnyside until his death in 2006.

Doreen is survived by her two children, Rick Orman (Michelle) and Maureen Orman; grandchildren, Sean (Angela), Riley, and Cayley Orman (Mike Meyer), Paige and Francesca Frewer, and Monica Rose Ryan (Dave); great-grandchildren Bella, Charlise, and Lochlan Orman.
