John KENNY

Obituary of John Richard (Jack) KENNY

January 4, 1925 – Fredericton, New Brunswick
March 21, 2020 – Calgary, Alberta

After a long and successful life, John (Jack) Kenny of Calgary, Alberta, passed away suddenly at the age of 95.

Jack was born and grew up in Fredericton, NB. After a very short career as a merchant seaman, he decided to seek a land based job and joined the RCMP. After training, he was posted to Alberta where he met his lovely wife, Edna, and they spent the next sixty-eight years together, supporting and encouraging one another, and their children. The RCMP moved their senior personnel often in those days and Jack was a commander in a number of detachments in Alberta- Mayerthorpe, Jasper, Lac la Biche, St Paul and Calgary. In 1971, after 25 years in the RCMP, Jack retired and went back to University to obtain his B.A. degree, joining his oldest daughter, Colleen, who was on campus at the time. He joined PanCanadian Petroleum in 1974 in their Human Resources department where he spent the next 16 years until his retirement in 1990.

With an infectious laugh and an easy going manner, Jack loved interacting with people, was always the guy who would introduce himself to everyone at parties, and played a pretty good piano, too. He loved history, current events and politics and was extremely well read. Dinner conversations were never dull. Jack never followed the crowd; he was his own person. Following retirement, he and Edna became very active in political campaigns-doing any job required which was often difficult being a liberal in Alberta. Until recent months, he was a regular at the YMCA. He loved the RCMP retired vets coffee get-togethers, was a compulsive organizer, and never shied away from letting his thoughts be known in letters to the editor.

He loved his family dearly. Jack is survived by his wife, Edna; his children, Colleen (Bob), Rick (Brenda), Dave (Mariella), and Lindsay (Greg); and grandsons, Derrick and Cameron. He was predeceased by his three siblings Muriel, Ronald, and Pauline.

A private family gathering will be held at a later date.
