Obituary of Leslie Louise Elizabeth SCHROEDER (nee Kope)
April 23, 1961 - March 31, 2020
The Schroeder family announces the peaceful passing of our precious and brave Leslie on Tuesday, March 31; only 3 weeks shy of her 59th birthday. Embracing her were her husband and life partner of 38 years, Marc, as well as her two sons, Christofer and Matthew.
Leslie’s family were the pride and joy of her life. In spite of dealing with health challenges over the last 10 years, she continued as a courageous, positive and selfless person. She was an inspiration to all that knew her. She will be deeply missed.
Leslie was born on April 23, 1961 to Lothar and Maria Kope in Edmonton, Alberta. She was raised in Calgary within a loving family where she was taught values that would define her adult life. She graduated with a Bachelors of Education Degree from the University of Calgary and taught in the Calgary Catholic School District specializing in Early Childhood Services. After her sons were born she remained at home, caring for and supporting her family. The kitchen was her sanctuary and it became a creative outlet for her. Central to her were travel and the outdoors; formative family life was highlighted by many memorable adventures near and far, often spent in her parents’ Westphalia camper. She could frequently be found walking her beloved Wheaten terrier on McHugh Bluff Park with neighbourhood friends.
In 2005, Leslie started a successful career in real estate. Most recently with Sotheby’s Realty, she and an inspiring partnership team used hard work, integrity and dedication to earn the respect of colleagues and clients, some of whom would become close friends.
During the years of her journey with cancer, she periodically became a spokesperson for the disease that would ultimately claim her life, by participating in a variety of fundraising and media events for Ovarian Cancer Canada. Friends and acquaintances from other organizations would also provide emotional and charitable support after hearing her story.
Leslie is survived by her husband Marc; and her two sons, Christofer and Matthew. She is also survived by her parents Lothar and Maria Kope, her brother Harry (Beth); and many nieces and nephews, relatives and friends.
Leslie would wish to be remembered for her warmth, and her compassion. She will forever be “Always on my mind”.
Current public health precautions prevent a large gathering for Leslie at this time. As a result, her family will hold a private ceremony in her honour. That will be followed by a celebration of Leslie’s life as soon as circumstances permit. Condolences, memories and photos may be shared and viewed on Leslie’s obituary at www.McInnisandHolloway.com.
In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to Ovarian Cancer Canada (https://ovariancanada.org/Get-Involved/Donate).
Leslie’s family would like to thank the caring staff at the Tom Baker Cancer Centre, especially Dr. Pamela Chu and nurse Sindy Loo Decosta.
In living memory of Leslie Schroeder, a tree will be planted in the Ann & Sandy Cross Conservation Area by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Crowfoot, 82 Crowfoot Circle NW, CALGARY, AB T3G 2T3, Telephone: 403-241-0044.
