Condolences
I first met Clem when he interviewed me in May 1975 for the position of Electrical/Electronics Engineer at Smith-Roles. I started work the next week and my desk was next to Allan Roles who by coincidence was by partner in our engineering surveying class 3 years earlier, but I only knew him as a fellow student. We have since become lifelong friends and visit often. I worked for Clem for 10 years, before he became my Landlord when I rented commercial space from him to start my own retail business.
My last visit with Clem was at his 90th birthday at Allan and Brenda’s home in Calgary in March 2011. On March 14 this year we happened to be in Calgary at Allan’s when Clem’s 99th birthday party had been planned but, due to the Covid-19 situation, was not held.

Sorry for your families loss. I have seen several YMCA members post their condolences for Clem's family and I believe that says a lot about his character and the impact that he had with them. I didn't know Clem but I think I would have enjoyed talking to him about his life and passions. Please take care.

Clem’s passing brings a flood of memories! My first job right out of high school was with Smith-Roles, it lasted over 7 years. During my tenure there were a multitude of experiences, mostly in the Purchasing Department. Clem was my mentor and taught me a lot. Joan was like a ‘mother’ in the workplace.
Two days after I left my beloved job,Bonnie and I got married. Clem and Joan were kind enough to attend the wedding. Our condolences to the family, you had wonderful parents.

I am thankful that my son alerted me to the obituary notice about Clem's passing....very sorry to hear the news and hope the family is coping in his absence. He was a unique, highly intelligent, and friendly person. I worked with him in his delivery of the Carnegie sales course and enjoyed every minute of our time together. I also enjoyed the time chatting with him at the YMCA where he was a dedicated swimmer, not fast but persistent. He was a credit to his profession and the city is the benefactor of his ingenuity and talents. Barry Chapman

Dear Cousins: It is with a heavy heart that I acknowledge the passing of your Father, Grandfather, and Great Grandfather, my maternal Uncle Clem. I have many fond memories from childhood onward. In later years, my husband Ed and I had many visits with your folks, either at their place or ours. During those occasions Clem & Ed enjoyed a few Scotch and your folks even shared a few dance steps together. I will always remember your Dad's quote: "Now, Joan, let ME tell the story". That saying provided a few chuckles. In recent times when we visited, his memory was not as sharp. However, we would reminisce with him and remind him of past happenings. When we asked him about these, he would say: " I don't remember, BUT, Tell Me
More ". It always amazed me that he would read several newspapers, weekly, and frequented the YMCA for his daily swims. His very unique voice could always be heard resonating throughout the Church at Sunday Masses. He was a very classy, intelligent, focused, and fun-loving guy. We will miss his ever smiling face. So, we send our Sincere Condolences along to All of You. GOD SPEED, UNCLE CLEM.
