Obituary of Gregory Joseph BOHNERT

June 2, 1952 – Palmerston, Ontario

March 27, 2020 – Calgary, Alberta

Gregory  “Greg” Bohnert, beloved husband of Sandy Watson Bohnert of Calgary, AB, passed away of a cardiac arrest at home on Friday, March 27, 2020 at the age of 67 years.

Greg was born in Palmerston, Ontario on June 2nd. 1952. He attended Conestoga College of Applied Arts and Technology where he graduated in 1975 with a diploma in Journalism and Liberal Arts Diploma A.A.

Greg then began his career in broadcasting and over the next forty years he enjoyed his position as a Radio News Anchor, reporting top stories of the day and eventually became a News Director and a Talkshow Host. He also held a position as a Broadcast Instructor at Columbia Academy for Radio, Television and Recording Arts. He worked at radio stations in Thunderbay, Ontario, Ottawa, Ontario, Truro, N.S, Calgary, Alberta, Regina, Saskatchewan, and Victoria B.C. The most recent was CBC radio Calgary.

As Greg got close to retirement he decided to continue to work so he attended a course at a local college and for the last 3 years he held a position of a Security Guard with The Canadian Corps of Commissionaires and was posted at Enmax where he took great pride in his work and enjoyed working with his coworkers.

Greg and Sandy met in 1988 and lived as common law partners until they married on July 19th, 2003. They spent a happy 31 years together with many happy and memorable times.

Greg was a volunteer and received many awards over the years from various organizations. He was a guest speaker on a panel for local TV discussing topics of current affairs and hosted a Telethon in Truro, Nova Scotia to raise funds.

While in Truro he was contacted by The Chamber of Commerce to interview business owners to voice awareness to the public about the nature of their business right in their own town. He interviewed, hosted, scripted and edited a weekly local TV show. In 1984 he won the National Journalism Award for the Best Radio News - Major Market while at CFCN in which he scripted, produced and narrated the full article called “The Energy Report”. In 2002 he won the Prairie Regional Sam Ross Award for the best editorial “Cloning of Christmas” presented by the RTNDA (Radio-Television News Directors Association). He also received the Prairie Regional Award for Best Newscast and Coverage of Breaking News.

Greg had a passion for music and loved dancing. Whenever one of his favourite songs came on he would have a twinkle in his eye and would want to dance with his wife Sandy. He enjoyed fixing things, woodworking, fishing and outdoor activities. He played on a curling team for many years and loved watching football games. Greg will be remembered for his quick wit and dry sense of humor. One of his favourite sayings was “I have the face for Radio”.

“FAITH” is the strength in which a shattered world shall emerge into the light.

He is survived by his wife Sandy; his step-son Trent Watson of Calgary, AB; step-daughter Corissa Kemp of  Grande Prairie, AB; step-grandchildren, Corissa Grace of Calgary, AB, Keshia Spenst of Chilliwack, B.C, Davy Kemp and Alex  Wueschner of Grande Prairie, AB, Jessica Ecclestone and her  husband Matthew of Calgary, AB, Cody Rodrigues of  Calgary, AB and Amanda Thompson Kemp of Carleton, Ontario; as well as numerous cousins and friends.

Greg was predeceased by his father Isadore Bohnert on July 30th, 1973; mother Kathleen “Kay” Jagelewski on December 18, 2010; and step-father Douglas “Doug” Brownlee on June 8th, 2019.
