Lloyd NORMAN

Obituary of Lloyd Ervin NORMAN

August 31, 1935 – Saskatoon, Saskatchewan

April 22, 2020 – Calgary, Alberta

Lloyd Norman passed away, with his wife Joan at his side, on Wednesday, April 22, 2020 at the age of 84 years.

Lloyd was born on August 31, 1935, in Saskatoon SK, and lived there until he moved to Calgary in 1957.

He is remembered lovingly by a large family including his wife Joan, son Kevin (grand-daughters Callista and Jessalyn); son Gary (Reta), grandson Jordan (Kelsey, great-grandsons Liam and Jackson), granddaughter Danielle (great-granddaughter Shayanne), and grandson Christopher (Samantha, great-grandsons Jadyn and Tye); son D’Arcy (Janice), grandson Evan; daughter Nicole (Don), grand-daughters Hailey and Makayla; sister Elda; two sisters-in-law Gail and Nadine Nicholas; as well as many extended family all across Canada. Lloyd was predeceased by his son Brian (at age 10), parents Erma Eliza and Leonard Norman, brothers Nelles and Ellwood, sister Evelyn Duane, brother-in-law Jim Nicholas and sister-in-law Nancy Molony.

Lloyd’s mother, Erma Eliza (nee MacDonald) was middle child of 5, each with an “E” – Earl (Winnipeg), Everett & Eldon (Rosetown area), and Edna (Saskatoon). His aunt Cassie (widow of Eldon) turns 100 on May 2nd. Lloyd’s father, Leonard, was a Dr. Bernardo’s orphan, sent from England to Ontario as a young lad to work on a farm with very hard work. His sisters, Viola and Daisy, were very lucky and sent to wealthy homes.

At the age of twenty-one, he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force (reserve), with an honorable discharge as Aircraftsman 1st Class in October 1958.

His lifelong profession was general insurance, both in Saskatoon and Calgary. He operated as an Independent Insurance Agent (Lloyd’s Insurance Limited) and also worked with a number of other companies.

While at Western Union Insurance Company, he met his future wife, Joan, via tele-type. He was a fast typist! At the end of each message, he would press the “alert” button and Joan’s office in Vancouver would laugh and say, “Joan you better answer”. This may well have been the first instance of online dating.

Lloyd was a member of the Masons, at Corinthian Lodge #22 in Okotoks. He was also a proud member of the Al Azhar Shriners of Calgary, with whom he spent many active years in the Tin Lizzie Corps, and the clown unit as “Oops”. With his clown car, he travelled to many southern Alberta towns for parades (including several appearances in the Calgary Stampede Parade) and enjoyed bringing fellowship, laughter, and joy to all.

Lloyd and Joan were able to be together for the last six months at Bethany Calgary long term care centre. Lloyd was challenged by a form of dementia that robbed him of his ability to speak and communicate effectively but left him with his strong sense of humour. He enjoyed nothing more than bringing a smile to someone’s face and kept that spark right to his last days.

Always a happy and sincere man, and a friend to all. He was creative, intelligent, and had a joke for every occasion. He will be dearly missed.
