Obituary of Daniel David SECTER

November 22, 1955 – Calgary, Alberta
June 11, 2020 – Calgary, Alberta

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Daniel David Secter.  He faced lung cancer with profound courage, grace and optimism until he peacefully passed away on Thursday, June 11, 2020.

Danny was predeceased by his younger brother Jeffrey, and his parents, Ruth and Cliff. Danny is survived by his wife of thirty-seven years, Mary Ann, and his sons, Matthew (Sarah) and Josh; his brother Shep; his sister-in-law Marina; and his nieces and nephews Michael (Katie) and Samara (Kris). He is also survived by his brother-in-law Chris Hutchings (Gail); and nieces, Sarah (Evan and daughter Piper), Lauren and Natalie (Matt) as well as many close cousins and his Auntie Leah.

After graduating from Henry Wise Wood, Danny moved to Edmonton to attend university and dental school at the University of Edmonton, graduating with his DDS in 1981.  He furthered his dental education by learning and specializing in Bioesthetic Dentistry.  He had a thriving dental practice in Calgary for over thirty-five years.  Dan was adored by his clients and admired by his peers for the unfailing quality and care that he brought to his profession.

Later health challenges made the practice of dentistry too difficult so Danny turned his energy and creativity to new avocations. He learned to build furniture and took up painting. One of his greatest joys was to head to the painting studio beside his little cabin in Bragg Creek to explore with colours and textures, and in particular, to create pieces for his family and friends. There are many Danny Secter originals hanging in homes throughout North America.

Danny had a thirst for life and celebrated much of it outdoors. He spent many days experiencing the sheer joy of cranking out the turns at Lake Louise with his family and many friends. He ensured that his sons had every opportunity to further enjoy the outdoors while biking up the mountain or fishing during many summer vacations on Hornby Island. Matthew and Josh also spent many weekends hiking and car camping with their family and friends while Danny would entertain everyone with spooky stories around the campfire.

Danny enjoyed golfing and backpacking trips with his brother and friends.  He also enjoyed travelling and had many wonderful experiences in many countries. He took particular pleasure in taking Mary Ann on frightening mountainous adventures.

Danny was deeply devoted and loyal to his family and friends. He felt great joy in connecting with everyone in his life; longstanding friendships, new friends, clients, neighbours and anyone he met while out on his daily walks with his little canine friend Ted.

We would like to extend our deepest gratitude to Dr. Gelfand, Dr. Hau and the Oncology team at the Tom Baker Cancer Center. We also extend our deepest thanks to the palliative care and pain management teams as well as the many nurses, nurse’s aides and staff who compassionately supported and cared for Danny.

Danny’s sudden and premature departure leaves a gaping hole in our hearts.  These difficult times make it impossible to gather to celebrate Danny with this many friends.  A private funeral and Shiva will be held.
