Condolences
Uncle Dave was an amazing soul! Together with Auntie Joan they created a loving family. One of my first memories of Uncle Dave was visiting him when I was little and he took be downstairs in his house to play records for me and introduce me to Buddy Holly, Elvis and many other artists. His enthusiasm for music, for people, for animals and for family was enormous. I also remember being at Uncle Dave and Auntie Joan's wedding and how happy he was. I really appreciated the relationship my dad, Mike and Uncle Dave developed as adults as they did not grow up together. I know my Dad was thrilled to be around his brother whether it was playing golf at the cabin or just sitting around the kitchen table laughing and drinking. It was such a special relationship. Uncle Dave always made me feel special, loved and welcomed. Uncle Dave and Auntie Joan always made sure if they were in the same city as I was to make take to spend time with me. I know if we were not in this time of pandemic his memorial service would have been attended by thousands of people because he touched so many with his kindness and compassion. The only bright spot at this time I can see is that Uncle Dave will be reunited with his brothers and sisters.
My thoughts and love are with Auntie Joan, Shane, Kathy and their family and this very sad time.

Our sincere condolences to Auntie Joan, Kathy and Shane and their families. Uncle Dave was a principled, fiercely independent, proud husband and father. Family always came first. He was a true Calgarian and a huge CFL football fan. He was generous and friendly and helped out many people. His home was open to all (family , friends and travellers). We enjoyed the numerous visits over the years and sharing his jovial company and many lively discussions and colorful stories. May his soul rest in peace in heaven with his departed family and friends until we see him again one day. Love Lena and Perry Sokolan
Auntie Joan, Shane, Kathy and family we are so very sorry for your loss. We have so many great memories of Uncle Dave growing up. We spent many summer weekends out at the cabin in Ghost Lake swimming, playing and horseback riding. Uncle Dave never came for a visit empty handed and always wrapped our gifts in famous Ukrainian wrapping paper (aka Newspaper). Uncle Dave was a great friend to my dad Dean and it is not lost on us the the two them were thick as thieves down here and are together running the show up there. We miss you, we love until we meet again! The McKerness Clan xoxo.
Dear Aunty Joan, Kathy, Shane and families - We are so sorry for your loss, and it is truly a terrible loss as growing up we had so many great visits with him and the family. Always smiling and playful - and the conversation was never dull. The Sokolan humour and folksy wisdom flowed freely when we were together - and he knew how to tell a colourful story and always find the humour in bad situations . With Uncle David family came first - as he enjoyed every minute of being a parent and grandparent. And he was very sentimental - he never forgot an act of kindness towards him and he knew what was important in life - and that’s why he treasured his family.
Our thoughts and prayers are with you all.
Love David, Donna, Gabrielle, Brennan and Kashley.
Dear Aunt Joan, Kathy, Shane and families. We were deeply saddened to hear of Uncle Dave's passing and offer our sincerest condolences to all his family. We had a lot of fun and adventures with Uncle Dave, like going to our first football game in the pouring rain and enjoying every minute, He always had a positive view on life and liked to joke around. We enjoyed so many good times when he would visit us in Legal. As we got older, and lived in different cities, it was hard to see as much of Uncle Dave and his family. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all at this difficult time.
Love, Bob, Dave, Barb, Mike and Steve Ouellet
Dear Aunt Joan and family.
We are so sorry for your loss. Uncle Dave always brought so much humour to the family get togethers with his straight forward approach. You were never left wondering what he thought! I remember years ago when I had just started bringing Ghislain to the family functions. He would always ask "is your Uncle Dave gonna be there?" He could usually be found sitting with him shortly after we arrived laughing and enjoying himself. We have also greatly appreciated the snail mail written letters with updates and pictures over the years. A birthday or anniversary was never forgotten! We will cherish the many fond memories of Uncle Dave and the immense love he had for his family.
Our thoughts and prayers are with you on this difficult day and always.
Love Marissa, Ghislain, Brandon and Brittany
So many great visits over the years with David/Joan and the kids. David was the best and we will miss him so very much. Love Dave, Laurie, & Brendan.
Where do I begin to talk of our friendship with Davesss and Joan. It goes wy back before they were married. At that tme I was with my 1st husband and they met through work. it was an instant friendship. How could not like him. Most times he had s in stitches laughing at his stories and jokes. As the years passed our children got to know him and also loved him.We all felt a special closeness. All of this happened in Winnipeg. Then I moved to Calgary and my husband there met him and also it was a like each other relationship..Yes we had many good times in Gull Lake, Wpg and Calgary. Memories made and cherished by all my family. Just writing this puts a smile on my face. Rest in peace dear friend, you will never to forgotten. Much love from us all....Chuck, Grace and family!! Condolances to Joan and family and his many friends.
Such sad news. I remember Dave, not only as the fun Dad when visiting the Sokolan home, but also as the #10 Midnapore bus driver where he would always say he had "saved me a seat" and would chat with me the whole way. I once asked him what his thoughts were on some big world event going on at the time and his reply was "I don't worry about things like that; I have Kathy and Shane and you kids to worry about instead." A big-hearted man; he will be missed. My thoughts are with you Kathy, Shane and Joan and with your families. Much love,
Erina
We are deeply saddened by the news of Dave’s passing, he is a great loss to all the people who knew him. Please accept our condolences for the loss. We hope that the love of family and friends will comfort and strengthen you in the days ahead. Please know that you are all in our thoughts and prayers. We love you all
Dave was a natural storyteller. I always enjoyed chatting with him at family gatherings. He could always be counted on to relate a few humorous accounts, most of them involving his job as a city transit driver. It was obvious from his stories that he really enjoyed the people aspect of his job, and that he had the best interests of his passengers at heart. I suspect that for many of his "regulars", riding on Dave's bus was the highlight of their day.
This tribute comes straight from my heart for Dave's kind way with children. My fondest memory is of how generous he was with Marissa and Jordan. Whenever they saw him, there was always a five or ten dollar treat from Uncle Dave. It meant a lot!
I also recall reading the clipping Mom Bray sent from the Calgary paper. WOW, so many transit travelers respected and appreciated him too.
With much love for Dave's family from Sharon.
I am deeply saddened by the loss of Dave. I enjoyed sitting with him and looking through his photo album of his beautiful family. He was so very proud of his granddaughters and whole family. Dave had a lot of fantastic stories and made me laugh many times. My sincere sympathy to the Sokolan family.
Jeff, Maya, Carter and I send all of you, and especially dear Auntie Joan, our love and sincerest sympathy at this very difficult time.
Today we talked about Uncle Dave. The kids were small the last time they saw him, but they remember a time when we had a wonderful feast of fish sticks (Carter's favourite) and the big mile-wide smiles on both Uncle Dave and Auntie Joan's faces when they graciously welcomed us as we rolled through town on a family camping adventure. So gracious and generous, even though we very rarely saw them, we all felt like we belonged there and that kindness struck us deeply.
Uncle Dave's big smile, big laugh, and even bigger heart has touched us all and we will hold that within us for the rest of our days.
Thank you Uncle Dave for your beautiful gift of memories and kindness. Rest in peace until we all meet again.

Dear Joan, Kathy & Brian, Shane & Val, Brayden and Lauren and Larissa,
I am so sorry for the loss of Dave/Dad/Grampa. You are such a special family and I know you will take care of each other. I will hold you in my heart and thoughts during this difficult time.
I have great memories of attending the annual City of Calgary Employee recognition event with Kathy and Dave - having so much fun chatting at dinner and then Dave escorting us to all the shops and rides that we could handle. He loved being part of our fun and shenanigans and egged us on as much as possible.
Take care of each other and Phil and I will be here for what ever you need.
Much Love
Dawna & Phil Cutcliffe
I was shocked when I learnt that Dave passed away. Dave was a great person and a loving person to be with. He will always share nice stories whenever he was at the bank. My thoughts are with his wife - Joan who stood firmly with him through the years.
We will all miss him and we know it is an irreparable loss to his family.
May his gentle soul rest in peace

As a neighbour of Shane and Val’s, we frequently saw Dave at dinner parties where he always greeted you like family. I have many wonderful memories talking with Dave while Shane and Val were on vacation, where we both complained about how their vacations were perfectly timed with a snowstorm ;). I will miss his wit and humour. Sending heartfelt condolences to his family.
