I write this memorial with tears in my eyes as I remember my good buddy Dwayne.
He was a straight shooter who called a spade a spade. He loved to have a good time, he was intelligent, responsible and employed a lot of common sense in everything he did. We had lots of good memories camping, fishing, golfing, cruising the Bow River in his jet boat and jamming.
Most recently we did a few things in March in Yuma which I’ll remember for ever: catching a rock concert in Laughlin Nevada (Don Felder and John Fogerty), playing pickle ball, bowling, riding on his bad motor scooter across the desert floor and getting a couple of rounds of golf in (all while under the threat of growing pandemic!). I’m thankful, I made the effort to visit him in AZ and for that last week we’ll spend together ever (and new friends I met while visiting).
They say to keep busy and always be planning your life right up until when the good Lord decides it’s your time. Indeed, he did that! We had plans later this summer for me to fly out to Calgary to camp and fish at Ya Ha Tinda (Dwayne and Kim’s favourite place in the world), maybe play a few rounds of golf and to go for a bike and boat ride or two (he promised he’d have that jet boat up and running before I got there). We bought tickets for the Legends of Rock cruise in February 2021 and planned to hit Key West for a few days at the end of the cruise (I think that will be a tough solo trip for me knowing Dwayne and I were supposed to be rock’n that boat together).
I feel a little empty with Dwayne gone now and I’m super sad for Christine, Graham & Meg (and William who will never get to know his Grand Father) and his brother Ken who just retired and I know was looking forward to hanging out with his bro in retirement.
Rest in Peace my dear friend, I’ll see you and Kim when the good Lord decides it’s my time.
I love and will never forget you.
Bruce
Here are some photos of Dwayne and I: in his jet boat, at Ya Ha, on the golf course and at his home (I know you and Kim are at the top of that Rainbow right now buddy).
Christine & Graham: I have had the privilege of knowing your dad since the spring of 2000 when I was hired as a trainee at Chubb. More than just a boss... Dwayne was my mentor... a confidante... and the best windshield drive time partner you'd want to have on all those far flung Joint Visits we used to go to together across Western Canada. Even years after leaving Chubb, I knew I could always find him hanging out in the garage at the end of a work day; door open; tunes playing; vehicles being worked on; rum & coke in hand. Going out to Cochrane for an impromptu visit with the Dwayne & Kim was like coming home... always gracious hosts and always glad to see you. Words cannot express how much your dad meant to me and how sad I was to hear about his passing. Dwayne was a fantastic man. My sincerest condolences.
