Obituary of Janusz Michal STUCHLY

Janusz Stuchly, of Calgary, AB, passed away on Sunday, July 12, 2020 at the age of 87 years.
Janusz was born in the town of Lwow, Poland, on April 4, 1933. His family then moved to Nowy Sacz, Poland, where he spent his years as a teen. In 1951, he moved to Krakow, Poland, for schooling.
Janusz graduated from Krakow’s Academy of Mines and Metallurgy with a Master’s Degree in Petroleum Engineering in 1956. He subsequently completed his Doctorate as Doctor of Science in Petroleum Engineering there in 1970.
Janusz met Joanna in 1956 and they married in Krakow in 1960.
He emigrated to Calgary, Canada, in 1971 with his immediate family joining him afterword.
Janusz had a true passion for state-of-the-art engineering design. His longest tenure was at the Calgary office of SNC Lavalin where he was involved in a variety of complex international and Canadian projects. These took him to client offices in the Middle East, Africa, Russia, Newfoundland, and others. One of his more notable local projects was at Shell Canada’s Caroline gas field West of Calgary which included the engineering design for130 km of sour gas pipelines and three large compressor stations.
Upon retirement in 2004, he became a Life Member of the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA).
Janusz thoroughly enjoyed travel and the rewarding experiences from sampling different cultures and environments. He felt blessed to have had the opportunity to swim with sting-rays in Tahiti, hike on the Great Wall in China, visit Buddhist monks in Bhutan, and to explore a variety of majestic sites such as the Taj Mahal, Machu Picchu, Giza pyramids, and Mt. Nemrut.
Janusz’s other favorite activities included skiing and hiking in the mountains. The latter often involved picking wild mushrooms, especially the Lactarius Deliciosus, which he would then prepare as a delicacy side dish with dinner.
Janusz is survived by his son, Mike Stuchly, daughter-in-law, Deana Michtich, and grandson, Cameron Stuchly, all of Calgary, Alberta, as well as his sister-in-law, Maria Stuchly, of Vancouver, BC.
He was predeceased by his wife Joanna in 2017 and his older brother Stan in 2003.
