August 15, 2020 – Invermere, British Columbia

Kurtis Lindsay Rei Nishiyama died suddenly at the age of 32 years old in Fairmont Hot Springs, BC, on Saturday, August 15, 2020.

Kurtis was born in Edmonton, AB, on February 11, 1988. He was an honors student at Louis St. Laurent High School in Edmonton. Kurtis was a talented athlete competing in track and field with the Leduc Track Club. Upon graduation, he attended Queen’s University where he continued to compete, focusing on high jump. In 2010, he received a Bachelor’s of Applied Science – Civil Engineering. Kurtis was deeply creative and one of the ways he expressed this was through architecture. He completed his Master’s of Architecture at the University of Calgary in 2013. Kurtis then joined marc boutin architectural collaborative inc. as an Intern Architect, AAA. In January 2015, Kurtis moved to Zeidler Architecture, where he qualified as a Registered Architect, AAA. He truly enjoyed being a part of this team, quickly rising to the position of Senior Associate. He was passionate about sustainable building design and achieved the AIBC with LEED AP Building Design + Construction certification, and he had also recently completed his Passive House training. Kurtis was also a member of The International Council of Shopping Centers, NAIOP Calgary, and the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada.

Kurtis always lived life to the fullest. He was an avid skier, golfer, surfer and cyclist, as well as an accomplished musician, who could pick up and play any instrument. He enjoyed travelling, sharing meals, and spending time with family and friends. He filled these moments with his unique sense of joy, his music, and his contagious laughter. He was also uncommonly kind and loving, bestowing these upon anyone he met, and especially upon his wife, Amy, whom he married on November 11, 2018.

Kurtis is forever and lovingly remembered by, and beloved to, his family, chief among them his wife Amy Lin, his parents, Perry and Laurie Nishiyama; his brothers and sisters-in-law, Kyle and Meaghan Nishiyama, and Michael Nishiyama and Alecia Kallos; as well as his grandmothers, Dorothy Lovenuik and Betty Nishiyama.

Kurtis is deeply missed by his family and friends and held tightly in the hearts of all who knew him. He was and always will be the light.

A private Memorial Service will be held on Monday, August 31, 2020. Condolences, memories, and photos may be shared and viewed on Kurtis’s obituary at www.McInnisandHolloway.com.
