Obituary of Stuart MOWAT

November 1, 1945 – Vulcan, Alberta
September 10, 2020 – Okotoks, Alberta

It is with sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Stuart Mowat of Calgary, AB, on Thursday, September 10, 2020 at the age of 74 years.

Stuart was born in Vulcan, AB to William and Christina Mowat on November 1, 1945. The family moved permanently to Edmonton, AB in 1947, where he grew up with his three siblings. As a young man, he excelled in various athletics, including track and field and basketball. After graduating from high school, he attended the University of Alberta, where he earned a degree in physical education. After a short stint working in Calgary, Stuart moved to Sydney, Australia, where he lived and taught for two years. He left Sydney to backpack through Asia and eventually travelled back to Calgary to continue teaching. He worked as a teacher for more than thirty years at various high schools throughout the city and coached two senior volleyball teams to city championships. He was a dedicated teacher and coach and won the respect of peers and students alike. He loved the mountains and was an avid skier and competitive tennis player. Stuart met Theresa in 1978 at the Calgary Ski Club, and they married in 1979 in Calgary. It gave Stuart great pleasure to watch his son Jeffrey grow up and attend his various athletic and extracurricular pursuits.

Stuart retired from the Calgary Public School Board in 2004. With the encouragement of his twin sister Christie, he joined the Westwinds Choir and discovered his love of singing. His beautiful baritone voice was a welcome addition to the Westwinds Choral Ensemble, and his involvement in the choir produced several meaningful friendships. In his retirement, Stuart especially enjoyed golfing, biking in Fish Creek, and reading and discussing books with his book club. Stuart and Theresa travelled extensively in their retirement, particularly enjoying their trips to visit Jeffrey as he moved to various cities around North America and Europe.

Stuart was described by many as an upbeat positive person, with a cheerful attitude, sparkle in his eyes, and smile on his face.
He is lovingly remembered by his wife Theresa, son Jeffrey; three siblings, Linda (Harry), Christie (Brian), and Tom (Norma), as well as many other friends and family.
