Obituary of George YOUNG

November 12, 1937 – Winnipeg, Manitoba
October 1, 2020 – Calgary, Alberta

George Young, beloved husband of Sharon Young (nee Doyle) of Calgary, AB, passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 1, 2020 at the age of 82 years.

George was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on November 12, 1937. He graduated from the University of Manitoba in 1960 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. George was a member of the Sigma Phi Delta International Fraternity of Engineers; a life member of The Association of Professional Engineers and a member of ASME International. George married his beautiful bride Sharon in 1960 and moved to Sudbury, Ontario to begin their new life together. He worked for Inco’s copper refinery for six years before deciding to return to their roots in Winnipeg, going to work for Manitoba Highways.

In 1973 the Rocky Mountains were calling and the family of five headed west to Calgary, Alberta. He worked for Western Co-Operative Fertilizer as the Manager of the Maintenance Division including responsibility for the health, safety and environmental programs. He retired after twenty-five years of service. Following retirement, George maintained his strong friendships with many of his colleagues by continuing to get together to enjoy a few laughs as the “WCFL coffee club”.

George had a tremendous passion for adventure, athletics and the outdoors. As a young man he enjoyed track and field, gymnastics, and swimming at the YMCA.  He passed on his love of athletics to his children, coaching and mentoring them in a variety of sports.  From handsprings in the living room, to wind sprints on the field, to crushing moguls on the ski hill, his children cherish these memories.

His move to Calgary allowed him even more time in the great outdoors. He soon taught his family to ski, hike, camp, and cycle. George always looked forward to the annual Golden Triangle bicycle tour in the Rockies. He was also an enthusiastic member of the Norseman Ski Club, meeting many good friends and experiencing exciting escapades on the ski trails.

George loved his ‘family’ at Edgewater where Sharon and he built and enjoyed a beautiful cabin on the Columbia River. He was known for his generosity for helping others, passion for being outdoors and his energizing laughter.

Besides his loving wife, George is survived by his two daughters, Karen (Rathe Mokelky) and Shelley (Len Gambles), and his son Scott (Denise Gilroy). George also enjoyed spending time with his six grandchildren, Ashleigh (and her father Dave Gerlitz), Breanne and Tyler, Braedan, Cole and Adam (and their mother Marney). George always had time to take them on an adventure and the grandchildren were the apple of his eye.

George is also survived by two sisters, Pat Docking (Ron) and Joyce Favreau (Larry), sister-in-law Wendy Ellison; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and neighbours.

George was predeceased by his father, Albert Young, and his mother, Emma Young.
