Obituary of Hans BAUER

November 10, 1931 – Bremen, Germany
October 5, 2020 – Calgary, Alberta

Hans Bauer of Calgary, AB passed away on Monday, October 5, 2020 at the age of 88 years.

Hans graduated from the Abeking and Rasmussen with an apprenticeship in Ship Building. He then worked for Bremer Vulkan in Germany and later worked for the Canadian Pacific Railway in Canada.  Hans finally settled into the warehousing industry, where he worked for forty-two years, and eventually formed his own warehousing company with his coworkers. He came to Canada with only the change in his pocket, hopped the rails from Ontario to Alberta, and settled in Calgary.  It was here Hans met Marion, the love of his life, and the two of them carved out a life together, and were married for 64 years. Hans was an avid bowler and curler for many years.  He also loved working with his hands.  He was always in the garage, tinkering and fixing things, and he loved building, including renovations to his house and helping on projects for his kids’ homes.  Hans was a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, Hillhurst Lodge Number 46. Hans and Marion went on many trips to California in their trailer, and met many couples from all over the United States and Canada; they particularly enjoyed their early trips to Arizona and Texas, where they formed lasting friendships. Hans’ most memorable vacation was a six-week trip to Europe in 1983, to revisit his birthplace and to spend time with his extended family and friends. His favourite quotes included, “Never be afraid to try something, or you’ll never achieve anything in life” and “Measure twice, cut once”. Hans will be remembered for his quiet strength and love; he provided the pillar that built the strong foundation for the family he cherished so dearly.

Besides his loving wife Marion, Hans is survived by his two sons and daughters-in-law; Michael and Sharlene of Calgary, AB; Andrew and Rofina of Calgary, AB; daughter and son-in-law; Shannon and Duane White of Strathmore, AB; and nine grandchildren; Ashley, Erich, Shawn, Leah, Nicole, Brett, Ethan, Sydney, and Connor; and his beloved dog Beau.Hans is also survived by his brother Detlev (Marianne) and sister Chris (Ove), all of Guelph, ON; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Richard and Elfriede Bauer; and his sister, Edith Barske.
