February 28, 1932 - Surakarta, Indonesia

October 10, 2020 – Calgary, Alberta

Robbie Vaags of Calgary, AB passed away on Saturday, October 10, 2020 at the age of 88 years.

Bob was born in Surakarta, Indonesia.  He was always very proud of his Indonesian and Dutch heritage.   At the end of WWII his family left Indonesia after spending four years in a concentration camp.  They moved to Australia for two years and lived in the Blue Mountains.  In 1948, his parents who originated from Holland moved back to Groningen, where Bob met Jantje (Jane) whom he married in 1952. They immigrated to Canada in 1955 with their two year old son, lived in Regina until 1963, moving to Shaunavon where Bob worked for SaskEnergy until his retirement in 1992, settling in Calgary.

The most important things to Bob were his family and friends. He enjoyed travelling, biking, hiking, eating Indonesian food, watching soccer, speed skating and Riders football.  He loved jazz music and even in his last days was singing along to Frank Sinatra and Louis Armstrong.

He will be sadly missed by his children, Robert (Shelley) and Monique (Gerry) and his six grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, along with family in Holland. Bob was predeceased by Jane in 2017.
