Obituary of Betty THRONDSON

February 25, 1938 – November 18, 2020

It is with great sadness that the family of Betty Throndson announce her passing with family at her side on Wednesday, November 18, 2020 at age 82 years.

Betty will be lovingly remembered by daughters, Shawna (Dan) Christensen and Terena (Mark) LeCorre; grandchildren Mark and Brady Christensen and Jackson LeCorre; her brother Dale Saby and sisters-in-law Wasanne Saby and Marie Throndson; as well as many relatives and friends.  Betty was predeceased by her loving husband of forty-nine years, Rod Throndson in 2010.

Betty grew up on a farm near Bawlf, AB, and was the youngest of six children.  She married Rod in 1961 and after three years teaching in Wildwood, AB they moved to St. Albert, AB where she lived for the next fifty-three years. She was a teacher, a travel agent, and volunteered hundreds of hours teaching ESL and helping run blood donor clinics. Above all, she was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and friend.

Betty’s lifelong love of travel took her on many adventures. These included an ocean liner voyage to Europe in 1959 (and flight back) and visiting all the provinces and territories in Canada, including living a year in Inuvik, NWT. She travelled to Mexico, Guatemala and many places in the USA. A major highlight was the epic three-family camping trip across Canada in 1979. She travelled to Europe a number of times with close friends and family, including a whirlwind tour in 2013 with her daughters and best friends; and a trip of a lifetime to Norway and Iceland with her daughters in 2016.

Family and friends were the core of Betty’s life and she gave her time, talent, energy and cooking skills freely and selflessly. She was always thinking of others first and how she could make the people around her happy. The cabin at Lake Isle was a special place for friends and family. Annual golf tournaments, staff parties, winter carnivals and other gatherings were made extra special with the amazing food Betty either prepared or potlucks that she organized.

Betty loved playing cards and was known to be very skilled, or sometimes just plain lucky, but was often the winner of family card games.  Bridge became one of her favourite games and she treasured the time she spent playing with friends.  Betty was a talented artist in many mediums such as painting, quilting, sewing and knitting.  She loved to read, enjoyed gardening, and over the years enjoyed camping, curling and golf.  Betty loved spending time with her family and we loved spending time with her.

While the family and close friends will gather together at a later date, there will be no formal service. If friends so desire, memorial donations may be made directly to the University of Calgary Hotchkiss Brain Institute, Cumming School of Medicine Dementia/Cognitive Disorders https://netcommunity.ucalgary.ca/brain-and-mental-health-research. Condolences, memories and photos may be shared and viewed on Betty’s obituary at www.McInnisandHolloway.com.

The family would like to thank Carewest Garrison Green and Staywell Manor Calgary for the excellent care they provided Betty in the last years of her life.

In living memory of Betty Throndson, a tree will be planted in the Ann & Sandy Cross Conservation Area.
