Obituary of Lidia MILOS (nee Stocovaz)

November 10, 1933 – Sterna Di Grisignana, Italy
December 7, 2020 – Calgary, Alberta

Lidia Milos, beloved wife of the late Antonio Milos, of Calgary, AB, passed away on Monday, December 7, 2020 at the age of 87 years.

Lidia was born in the hamlet of Sterna Di Grisignana on the Istrian Peninsula. Including herself, she was part of a family of six children.  By the time she was twelve she had lost her father.  Her widowed mother never married again.  Lidia married Antonio Milos on February 27, 1954.  As the political environment changed, they were forced to immigrate to Trieste, Italy. There they stayed in a refugee camp for a year and then immigrated to Canada in 1957.

In Canada, they worked in the Okanagan orchards. While there Lidia gave birth to a daughter, Margaret.  As work was hard to find, they moved to Calgary the summer of 1959. In Calgary Lidia worked as a cook in many of the downtown restaurants.  She finally got a job cooking at the University of Calgary Dining Centre.  She worked there until she retired.  Her greatest love was the Christmas lunches she made every year in the Blue Room.

Her husband died in 1984 from cancer.  The next year she joined St. Luke's choir and has been singing there until last year.  Lidia enjoyed singing, dancing, picnicking, traveling, playing cards and time with her family, especially with her grandchildren and great- grandchildren.  She made friends everywhere she went.  She struck up a friendship with Guido Santin that lasted over twenty years. They spent many nights dancing and playing cards.  They spent the cold winters on Hawaiian beaches.

Lidia is survived by her son Bruno and his wife Mirella, of Calgary, AB, their sons, Antonio and Davide; her daughter Margaret and her husband Walter Pertich, of Kelowna, BC, and their children, Nicole Pertich (Patrick Bain), Paul Pertich (Kirsten) and Alexie Obrigewitch (Sean), all in Edmonton. She has five great-grandchildren, Samuel, Aiden, Lucy, Ava, and Liam. Lidia is also survived by her brother Angelo and sister-in-law Peri, of Penticton, BC, and their children, Frank and Susan and their families; her brother Genio and sister-in-law Ana, of Croatia, and their children; her sister-in-law Ines Stokovac, of Vancouver, BC, her children, Lucio and Joanna and their families; and her sister-in-law Rita Milos, of Modena, Italy, and her family. She is survived by numerous nieces, nephews and cousins who live all around the world.  Her friends number in the hundreds.

She was predeceased by her mother and father, Anna and Giovanin Stokovaz; her husband Antonio, her sisters, Velina and Maria; her brother Giovanin, and special friend Guido Santin.

Due to Covid-19 restrictions, a private Funeral Service will be held. Condolences, memories and photos may be shared and viewed on Lidia’s obituary at www.McInnisandHolloway.com. In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made to St. Luke’s Catholic Church, 1566 Northmount Drive N.W., Calgary, AB T2L 0G6.
