Condolences
Dear Shaunna, Andrew and Gabrielle, My deepest sympathy on the passing away of Valerie, my teaching colleague and a good friend. I was sad to hear the news. I missed talking to her on the phone and hearing about Gabrielle's achievements. She was very proud of her granddaughter. May Valerie rest in peace. My prayers are that you will remember the good times together and be at peace.

Dear Shauna,
My condolences and love to you and family. Valerie was a wonderful cousin who had the gift of brightening every corner of the room when she made an entrance. My treasure chest of memories takes me back to the fun times we enjoyed in Montreal and Toronto. I will miss her radiance and contageous laughter. May many bands of angels sing her to her rest and may you be comforted by the peace that surpasseth all understanding.

Valarie was always dancing to music and laughing with the staff. I always looked forward to going to work to see her contagious smile and hear her jokes! I was so saddened to hear this devastating news. My heart goes out to you and your family at this time of grief.
Very sorry to hear of the passing of Aunt Val, may she rest in love and know that her spirit lives on through the family.
Sending our condolences to you, Shauna and Andrew, Aunt Wilmot, Aunt Pansy, and the extended family. Aunt Val was a wonderful teacher with a strong Spirit of Life, and giving. It is fitting the beginning of our New Year is the celebration of her Eternal Life! God Bless us all.

Please accept my deepest sympathy for your loss. As a young lady growing up in Mackenzie , Val and my Mom had a special friendship which continued even after Mom immigrated to Canada and settled in St Hubert with me ,and often visited her.
I started using Mom's bible and as I was going through it one day, I saw that she had written Val's phone number on one of the inside cover pages. Of course, this brought a smile to my face.
Val had a beautiful smile and an infectious laugh. She was also full of life and very kind and always had a joke or a story to tell.
She will missed and I hope that you all find the strength in the love of family and in the warm embrace of friends.
May she rest in peace.
So sorry to hear about your loss Shaunna and family. She ws so vibrant and full of life. My family remember the time she spent with us as kids at our home. She came for piano lessons that lasted more than two hours because she was combing our hair and chatting and laughing with my mom. She will be greatly missed.
My deepest condolences on your loss. I remember her very fondly as my grade 6 teacher at St. Mary's. I wish I had known she was also in Calgary.
Wishing you all courage and strength during this difficult time.

I saw the obituary in the Montreal Gazette. I could not believe my eyes. I had tried to get in touch with Valerie for the past several years but could not make the connextion. Valeire wrote a very good MA thesis in the Educational Studies Program at Concordia. I was her thesis supervisor:
Stephenson, Valerie (1999) Equal to the challenge : reconstructing ways of thinking, knowing and doing, Re: the schooling of young black women in Metro - Montreal. Masters thesis, Concordia University.
It is freely available on Spectrum, from Concordia University. You can get to it by googling the information I have presented above. This is the acknowledgement page of the thesis:
"My gratitude to the twelve young people without whose cooperation this study would not have been possible. I am especially indebted to Professor Arpi Hamalian for her invaluable assistance and support during all stages of this work. To the many others who believed in me, and who freely gave of their time, effort and skills, (especially Wilmot, Sharon, Andrew and Shauna) I wish to extend my sincere thanks".
The reading of the obituary brought back to me precious memories of time spent with Valerie duing her MA studies at Concordia and deepening of my understanding of systemic anti-black racism in our schools and her valient efforts to document the situation and to shed light in the experience of young blacks in our school system.
As I have Guyanese family members I want to use an expression I cherish: Valerie was a woman you could "tie bundle with". Authentic, sincere, reliable and always helpful and focused on achieving her goals to the best of her abilities.
My sincere condoleances to the family and I will keep Valerie and her loved ones in mind and prayers on the first of January at 2 pm. Arpi Hamalian (arpi.hamalian@concordia.ca).
I’m going to miss our friendship. You gave me four beautiful books, I will continue to read them. To Shaunna and family, my condolence and may God give you comfort and strength.
Much Love,
Auntie Rosie
Our deepest condolences to Shauna, Andrew and Gabrielle. At this sad time may you find comfort and strength in knowing that there are others who care about your loss and are remembering her too.
May precious memories and thoughts of your Mom bring you peace as every day goes by.
May perpetual light shine upon you my friend and may you rest in peace.
