Obituary of Gerald (Gerry) WERRY

March 14, 1929 – Winnipeg, Manitoba
December 27, 2020 – Calgary, Alberta

Gerry Werry of Calgary, AB, passed away on Sunday, December 27, 2020 at the age of 91 years.

Gerry was born in 1929 to Walter and Helen Werry (McNair) in Winnipeg, MB, where he grew up with his brother Ron. During WWII, Gerry was a bugler with the Royal Winnipeg Rifles. He was very proud of his participation, and donated a legacy stone to the cenotaph in Winnipeg.

Dad fell in love with Mom when he was eighteen years old. He asked her to marry him soon after. She was twenty-one and told him to get a job first. And what a job he got! Thirty-seven years with Imperial Oil Limited starting his career in Winnipeg as a Mail Clerk and ending it as a Senior Buyer in Calgary in 1986.

Dad thoroughly enjoyed his retirement, he and mom loved to participate in half-marathon walking races, placing in their age group in several events. He loved traveling with Mom to Maui, Europe and they had three cruises together. Besides walking, he loved scuba-diving, cross country skiing, reading and most of all eating! No one enjoyed food more than Dad. He was always the last to finish at the table; he just didn’t want the meal to end. He loved corny jokes and telling “shaggy dog” stories. He was such a wonderful grandpa.

Dad was a wise and gentle man. He had a keen sense of right and wrong and always led by example. When Mom developed dementia nine years ago, he devoted all his love and attention to her every need. He learned how to cook and bake. His hard work and devotion to his wife inspired all of us.

We will all miss you Dad, but your wisdom and goodness will carry on in your children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Dad leaves behind his loving wife of seventy years (June 24, 1950) Marjorie (nee Corrie), his four children, Tim (Linda), Jim (Jake), David (Liane) and Debbie (Byron); eight grandchildren mourn him greatly, Leah (Robert), Matthew (Angela), Jace (Joelle), Evan (Michelle), Bryn, Meaghan (Omar), Courtney and Shae; and five great-grandchildren, Taylor, Robert IV, Avery Jo, Lily and Charlotte.
