Condolences
Dear Carolyn and Family
I am so sorry to hear of Robert's passing.
I have been away from Calgary for 20 yrs and returned so I was trying to connect with him so needless to say I was shocked to find this news. I last messaged him on Linkedin in Nov 2020 but heard nothing. Now I know why.
I am not sure if you remember me but Robert and I took the train to work and home many times discussing the challenges of the day. I lived in MapleRidge and you in WillowPark. My daughter, babysat your kids when your son was very small.
I worked with Robert at AMEX. We were team leads. I moved to Montreal in 2000. Our friends, Lori and Quentin were also leads. We had some good times. I remember him telling me after we all left the team that he felt like he was on survivor with a whole new group and felt he was next to be voted off. By then I believe he moved into call management which he loved and was really good at.
I did see Robert a few years back when I was waiting at the Calgary airport for a pick up from my daughter. It was around Christmas and he was just returning from helping family out in Ottawa. We were actually on the same plane and did not know it. He was waiting for his daughter as well to pick him up. We only briefly spoke as the airport pickup was insane. I always meant to reconnect with him. I am very sad now that I didn't.
The tribute to Robert is very lovely. I knew some of this information but was enlightened by a lot. He was a good friend and colleague and so proud of his family. I wished I had taken the time to connect with him again. Time is so precious.
Once again my deepest condolences to you and the family. If you get a chance it would be nice to see you again.
Sincerely
Katie Catala
I was very fortunate to work with Robert at Amex, he was incredible to work with and always enjoyed our chats. He was a true gentleman but most of all he was a kind and dear friend.
So very, very sorry to hear of the passing of Robert...I knew him as a work colleague at AMEX. he truly was a special person. My sincere condolences to all your family....
I am so sorry for the loss to you and your family. I did find out some new things about Robert while reading the Obituary though.
The picture of Robert (as I know him, not as Rob), looks just like the last time I saw him which was when he and his son were riding their bikes around Carburn Park about 4-5 years ago. I had a great chat with him while they both got their breathes back.
One memory is that while at Amex he shaved off his beard for the first time in a very long time. He said that it scared the children seeing him without a beard, so he had to grow it back. What a baby soft looking face he had. Within a few weeks he had his beard back, and the family was happy again. It was funny now knowing who he was other than what his name plate said.
Once again I am sorry to hear about his passing.
Dear Hiles Family
