Condolences
Dear Janet and family,
I only learned today about Dr Dawson as I had missed seeing him and having the odd meal with him at Staywell since Covid. One of the last times together, I brought my old Foothills Hospital Directory and we had some good laughs over how we all looked back then! He was a wonderful teacher, a really kind mentor, and a true gentleman. I know how much he missed Pauly..
All the family photos at her funeral spoke of an abiding and loving family bond...
Many blessings,
Marina Skulsky
Bruce and family
please know that you are in my thoughts.
I hope you can find comfort in your memories
We are saddened to learn of the passing of John Dawson. He was part of what defined Calgary, starting in the early days when Calgarians would greet each other by saying: “Aren’t the mountains beautiful today”. He shaped the medical and academic communities, and stood tall as a leader. He and Pauly were good friends to Allan and Joyce. I remember his quiet wisdom and friendly manner. He was a thoughtful, caring, and genuine man. We extend our sincere condolences for the Dawson family. His memory will live on.

I have thought so often of your family these past few days and wish to express my sincere sympathy to all of you. John was a good friend of my husband and I for over thirty years. We admired his superb practice of medicine in many different venues. We enjoyed frequent social gatherings with them and appreciated their ability to make every such occasion much more fun because of their keen sense of humour. My thoughts and prayers are with you.
Sincerely,
Peggy Rodway
So sorry for your loss. I so appreciated John’s kind and thorough professional help. I was so thankful for the care he provided Pauly, too. Condolences to the Dawson family from Dorothy Little and family.
I was saddened to read of John's passing. I first met him as a Foothills Hospital intern in 1970. He mentored me & I learned so much by watching both his wonderful bedside manner & clinical acumen. During my 36 years on the medical staff at Foothills he was always ready to discuss cases & share his wisdom as well as a few chuckles when we met in the doctor's lounge. My deepest condolences to his family at this time.
Jerie and I would like to express our condolences on John’s passing – an exemplary physician and colleague and a major contributor to the development of the Medical School, a very positive and effective force in the great deal he undertook. I feel privileged to have known his warmth, kindness and friendship.
Sincerely,
Peter Roxburgh
My sincere condolences to the family of John Dawson.

My sincerest sympathy to all the Dawsons. Don and I shared many wonderful times with John and Pauly, many hosted by Roy

Janet and family, I know that you will cherish your many happy family memories. Keep sharing the memories.

I met John in 2011 when I was the proud recipient of the John Dawson Award for Clinical Excellence. His was a remarkable career and I was so pleased to get the award and, in particular, to meet him and have the opportunity for a delightful conversation.
My condolences to John's family. I am fortunate to have known him for several decades. He was the first teacher who taught me, and showed by example, how to be with patients and how to work with colleagues. I know that I'll continue to hear his voice over my shoulder, giving advice with a gentle chuckle.
My sympathies to the family, with John's passing.
John was always approachable, helpful, knowledgeable, and to the point, from his early Foothills Hospital and faculty days, and more recently as a source of information in writing the history of the Cumming School of Medicine.
Few remember that John was directly involved in bringing Dr. Bill Cochrane to Calgary as the founding dean in 1967, and was his first appointment and Associate dean. He was of inestimable help to Bill in the early years, and to me more recently in recalling those events for the school's history.
My condolences to the extended Dawson family. John was a mentor and friend. He was an excellent clinician, teacher, true gentleman, and proud family man. I was lucky to have met him professionally and personally and will always miss walking out of Flames games with John and Pauli. May their memories be a blessing.

To the family of Dr. John Dawson.
John was one of the first people I got to know after arriving in Calgary in 1973. He was among the finest I have had the good fortune to know and work with. Always respectful, interested in others and never lost interest even years after his retirement from medical practice. A phrase that is never used too often, a life well lived. I would like to offer my condolences to his family and am sorry for their loss.

When I was a teenager visiting the Dawson household, I always thought of John as the ultimate dad: warm, kind, smart, dignified and grounded. Back in those days, there was a running gag that meant Bob had the nickname "Awesome Bob" Dawson. It felt natural, then, to give your dad the name "Awesome Senior". That is a word I have associated with him ever since, and it always fit. The last time I saw him, unfortunately, was at Pauline's funeral. Yet even at that very sad moment, he was able to find the space to connect with me - we had a lively, funny conversation. I will remember him as a very fine man who led a very fine life, and I send my deepest condolences to the whole family.
