Sadly, a generation of Jekills has passed. Judith (Judy) Carol Jekill, nee Smith, passed away Friday, May 14, 2021 and Peter Henry Jekill, passed away February 26, 2021. They are mourned and deeply missed by their son, Peter David (Ali Whelan) and daughter Dorothy (Charlie O’Donnell).

“Lives well Lived” described both of these people to perfection. Judy and Peter loved Calgary and enjoyed it in intimate detail by walking everywhere and getting to know people in all of the places they visited regularly. Judy was born in Calgary, July 26, 1936, and Peter was born in Montreal May 10, 1930, but he became a Calgarian forever after moving in 1956. They met each other through lifelong friends, and they married April 19, 1963.

They were traditional parents of the 60’s; Judy left her job as a laboratory technician to stay home and invest her love and wisdom in their children and household, and Peter made his mark in the Insurance industry. They both felt strongly about being involved in activities that enriched the city, improved their community of Mount Royal, and improved the lives of many around them. They were always surrounded by friends, many who grew up with them and others made on Morrison Street - the family home for 50 plus years. For Peter David and Dorothy, the Jekill house was an extremely enriching and happy place to grow up. There was nothing but unconditional love, support for young dreams, and helpful encouragement from their parents.

Judy and Peter were quiet, lifelong philanthropists. They were committed supporters of many worthy causes and would always be willing to help anyone in need. The generous and caring way they lived their lives was deeply inspiring to their children and their grandchildren. Peter and Judy’s generosity was matched by their kindness and love for spending time with friends, family and their many acquaintances at coffee shops and restaurants around the city.  They also deeply valued their decades-long involvement in St. Stephen’s Anglican Church and adored their many friends in the congregation there.

Judy and Peter have the most wonderful collection of grandchildren who will miss them dearly - Ethan and Siobhan O’Donnell, and Nicolas, Brock, Trinity, Alexus and Charlotte Jekill.  Peter and Judy always hosted weekly Sunday dinners, organized family gatherings and holidays and they were the nucleus around which everyone gathered. Also deeply loved by the entire family are Judy’s sisters, Sidney and Jane Ann (deceased) and Peter’s brother Robert.

Judy and Peter lived for the past 5 years at their daughter and son-in-law’s home. Their wish was to live to their last day at home and both passed away peacefully surrounded by their family. Peter David, never had a closer relationship with his parents than during the last few years when they lived with Dorothy.

A week before Peter’s passing, he told his son: “I’ve done everything, and I’ve been everywhere I have ever wanted to go” – that sure sounds like a life will lived! Judy and Peter, you will be dearly missed.
