Obituary of Peter Paul OBERSTEINER

June 16, 1936 – Kuhnsdorf, Austria
May 30, 2021 – Calgary, Alberta

Peter Obersteiner, beloved husband of Glee Obersteiner of Calgary, AB, and Dad to April Obersteiner and her husband David Welsh, passed away on Sunday, May 30th, due to complications from diverticulitis a couple of weeks shy of his 85th birthday. Father's Day will never be the same.

Dad emigrated from Austria as a teenager and finished high school in Calgary. He fell deeply in love with Mum and married her in 1962. He was a devoted husband right to the end of his life. He was a fantastic father too; always eager to pick up extra shifts at CP Air Cargo/Canadian Airlines, where he worked, so he could take his family out for buffet dinners, or on a family holiday, and to pay off his mortgage early. His family included his dogs too. Dad very much enjoyed walking them on Nose Hill Park's path behind his house and chatting to neighbours along the way. When he was finished cleaning up after dinner, he did word searches and read the newspaper. Politics was his favourite section. Being a true-blue Conservative, he just couldn't understand how his daughter could vote NDP/Green. No matter though; no arguments ensued only lots of teasing and laughs on the subject. He was also a devout Catholic but he never pushed his religion on anyone else. In his darkest hour with the untimely passing of his son Bryce, Dad managed to carry on and to lift the grieving spirits of the rest of the family. About 30 years ago Dad opened a fortune cookie that said, "He is the richest who is content with the least." At every family Christmas dinner thereafter, he would pretend that quote was in his cracker and periodically throughout the year Dad would proclaim it again and remind us that if we were lucky enough to have our family, friends, and food, then we were doing alright!

Dad's siblings include Rosie, Erika, Martha, Magda, and Ernst. His nephews and nieces include Frankie, Claudia, Sari, Brian, and Bernie.
