Allan McDOUGALL

Obituary of Allan Kent McDOUGALL

January 27, 1943 - Portage La Prairie, Manitoba
May 28, 2021 – Calgary, Alberta

On Friday, May 28, 2021, our Dad passed away in the same way he lived, according to his own rules.  At 78 years old, he had ‘lived a wonderful life,’ following a short battle with brain cancer.

Kent was born in Portage La Prairie, MB, and grew up in MacGregor, MB, with his brother Rick, and his grandparents Helen and Dan.

Kent was always involved in sports and was an excellent hockey player.  Pitching baseball as a teen in the men’s league, his pitching arm earned him the nickname Sam (the Rifle), after Sam Etcheverry, a nickname that stuck all his years, including at work. Many were surprised to find out that Sam was not his actual name.

In 1962, Kent began work for Manitoba Hydro as an apprentice Lineman.  He worked in many remote areas in northern Manitoba, easily making friends and forging life-long friendships over a lot of rum, and many laughs.  After ten years with Manitoba Hydro, he moved to Alberta where hr continued his career of forty-three years, with The City of Calgary/Enmax. He retired in 2004 and moved to Panorama, BC, and became an avid skier up to his last days.

Described in the words of many people as a great man, lovely, kind, wonderful, a legend, an incredible friend, and a rock in our community, our Dad was an exceptional man who had the blessing of having many cherished friends in his lifetime, most recently in Panorama, BC. Dad helped many people in his life, including many who didn’t ask.  He taught us the importance of working and playing hard. He could be counted on to stand by his word and taught us through his actions, that integrity, forgiveness and compassion were important values.

Dad was always called responsible, but he was a rebel at heart.  He learned to ski at 48 and bought his first motorcycle at 52. When he moved to Panorama, he made friends easily, with whom he took many trips to the US on motorcycle and traveled Europe several times. His favourite trip was his last to Mexico, where with his friends, he discovered his new favorite place. He skied with these friends every season, up until his last day out on March 11, 2021. It was his best ski day in years.

Our dad was a truly blessed individual, to have cultivated so many close friendships and family relationships over the course of his life. We took this photo on the long weekend, doing his favorite thing: camping in his beloved Panorama.  It was the best weekend ever, according to him. He smiled, sat beside Toby Creek, visited with his friends, kids and grandkids, and drank some beer, and rum, with a little scotch. He took it all in and let it all go.

He will always be lovingly remembered by his former spouse and her husband, Doug and Barbara Renton; children, Heather and Brad; his cherished grandchildren, Sam, Emma, and Liam; his sister-in-law Delores (Rick); his brothers, Bill (Marg) McDougall, and Don McDougall; step-siblings, Chris-Ada McTavish, Sandy (Dave) Gross, and Doug (Jerri) McTavish; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Kent was predeceased by his brother, Rick, and his parents, Leone McTavish (McLaren) and Allan McDougall.

A Private Funeral Service will be held on, Saturday, June 19, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. Family and friends are invited to join Mr. McDougall’s service streamed live (see below) on the day of the service.
