Condolences
Ernie was my brother-in-law by name, but brother in my heart. He was a kind, caring, loving man. He loved my sister, his family, his friends and treated everyone respectfully. Having conversations with Ernie was always a pleasure, and I always learned something each time I spoke with him, even near the end.
He was extremely well-read. Ernie was a very intelligent and passionate person, as evidenced by all of the clippings he kept neatly in his filing cabinet about subjects that interested him. He was passionate about many things and did everything to the best of his abilities.
I met Ernie when I was just a little one when he was dating my sister. He got the biggest kick out of teasing me, and or playing tricks on me. He would offer me a nickle, dime, or quarter if I would take the bet on whatever he could think up, and he would always have a good laugh at my expense.
I think Ernie had a very full and satisfying life. He travelled a lot, sometimes for work, but also for pleasure. He really loved visiting Victoria, and watching all the ships there.
I loved our conversations. Some were about his work and all of the different things that he did and places he went, and some were about his life at Winnipeg Beach and all the things that he grew up doing, such as raising goats, keeping bees, working on the Boardwalk, and of course the "Penny King" story. I will miss our talks, and I will miss him very much. He was a wonderful, and special person who I am so glad was part of my life. Rest in Peace Ernie.
Heartfelt condolences to Freddie and the entire Chapel family on your loss. Ernie will be fondly remembered as a true gentleman with a no-nonsense approach to important matters combined with a great sense of humor. It was a pleasure to have known and worked with Him for so many years as a longstanding member of the Board of Directors at Rosewood Estates.
God Bless and rest in peace.
Ernie was my brother-in-law. When Freddie and Ernie were dating, probably in the early 1960's, Freddie was living at our family home on Bannerman Avenue. Ernie came over most nights. It was the family joke as we all knew when the four-door Pontiac beast crossed the railroad tracks a few doors down as our television reception would be interrupted by the motor, but no one knew why. Whoever noticed it or heard the car would yell "Freddie, Ernie is here!"
Ernie was a kind and gentle soul and I very much appreciated all these years that he took care of and loved Freddie deeply. I know your heart is shattered right now, Freddie, but in time may the wonderful memories you made together and the years you were lucky to be together carry you until your heart is filled with the warmth of his love.

On our wedding day in 1975, Ernie, my brother-in-law, was asked to drive Joanne to the church. He almost performed the task as requested. When they arrived at the church, instead of parking the car, Ernie turned to Joanne with that mischievous grin of his and said "We should just go around the block again. Bruce will wait for you." By the time he got back, parked the car and got the bride into the church, the service was almost 15 minutes behind schedule. What a guy!
At family gatherings, Ernie waited patiently for an opening to begin a political debate to challenge what the New Democrat Party was doing in Manitoba. As soon as Gerry and I took the bait, he would turn to Herb and Dad and discuss the Liberals. Wally was wise to this ploy and just laughed. You see Ernie was a diehard Conservative and a master at political conversation. It always ended in laughter and we appreciated his diplomacy. The conversation was never mean spirited and we all enjoyed the jovial bantering. Ernie had a way of including everybody and we will always remember his gentle ways.
I am so very sad to say goodbye to Dear Ernie. Will miss his wonderful sense of humor and of course, his kindness. He was a true gentleman to the end .I enjoyed our visits and phone calls, he always had a story or two to tell and my favorite might be the Penny King. Ernie of course, was the Penny King.
God Bless and may you rest in peace.
