Obituary of Cathy Velker

Cathy Velker passed away on October 14, surrounded by her family. She is survived by her adoring husband of 52 years Russ; children Kelli (Nicola), Tamara and Russell (Rindi); grandchildren Kallen, Max, Carter and Kathleen; siblings Murray, Marilyn (2010), Margot, Jane and John; brothers and sisters in law and many caring nieces, nephews and friends. Cathy was born in Ottawa and moved to Calgary with her family when she was 12. Her dream of being a wife and mother was fulfilled to perfection. Cathy was happiest when surrounded by family, and loved anything to do with her grandchildren. She had the energy of a toddler, and a flair for personal style and décor. She always looked like a million dollars. Her infectious humor touched everyone, leaving many stories that bring laughter and smiles. Kindness and altruism came naturally to Cathy and she spent many years working with Inn from the Cold at her parish, as well as other volunteer work. Cathy’s unwavering strength and will to live, together with her intense love for her family carried her through her 15 month battle. She never complained and graciously treated everyone with kindness and respect. She appreciated every card, gift, flower, email, phone call and visit. Cathy taught us all a valuable lesson: Live your life with kindness, humour and grace. Love your family with all your might and never, just never, give up hope. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Bonaventure Catholic Church (1600 Acadia Drive S.E.) on Thursday, October 19, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. Reception to follow at the church.
