Obituary of Derek FREEDMAN

August 21, 1941 – Swansea, South Wales, Britain
June 24, 2021 – Calgary, Alberta

Derek Freedman, beloved husband of Margaret Freedman (nee Rose), of Calgary, AB, passed away on Thursday, June 24, 2021, at the age of 79 years. Although in ill health for several years, he never complained. 

Derek was born in Swansea, South Wales, Britain on August 21, 1941, and attended Bishop Gore School. He obtained his HNC in Mechanical Engineering. 

Derek married Margaret on September 15, 1962. His career took them to many places around the world. He was well respected in his field. Finally settling back in Calgary, AB. Derek loved to travel for pleasure too; his favorite destination was Maui and he loved to cruise.

Although a very proud Canadian, Derek always held his homeland close to his heart. You can take the boy out of Wales but you can’t take the Wales out of the boy. He was a member of the Calgary Welsh Society and so enjoyed the many get-togethers. Derek had a love for rugby, hockey, golf, and most sports, although no longer able to participate, he followed them closely, he also loved to play bridge and board games.  

He will be remembered as a loving father and husband. Besides his loving wife Margaret, Derek is survived by daughters and sons-in-law, Jacqueline Ellen and Keith, Julie Louisa and Blair. He is also survived by his brother and sister-in-law Tony and Beth; and  his sister- in-law and nephew Mary and Christopher. Derek was raised in a loving extended family and will be missed by his family back in Wales. Derek was predeceased by his brother-in-law Alan.
