Obituary of Joseph Werner LUNDQUIST

November 25, 1939 – Frontier, Saskatchewan
June 24, 2021 – Calgary, Alberta

Joseph Werner Lundquist of Calgary, AB, beloved husband of 59 years to Marilyn, passed away on Thursday, June 24, 2021 at the age of 81 years.  Besides his wife Marilyn, Joe will be lovingly remembered by daughter Leslie Lundquist of Calgary, son David (Marla Grossman) Lundquist of Olds, AB and beloved friend Margie McCulloch of Calgary.

Joe was predeceased by two infant children in 1965 and 1971, and brother Edward in 2017.  He leaves to mourn sister Elsie, brothers Leonard (Joyce), Curt (Dianne) and Dale (Joan); and numerous nieces and nephews, all in Canada; as well as many extended family members in Canada and Sweden.

Joe was the firstborn of Werner and Isabelle Lundquist and moved with them to a homestead farm in Rolling Hills, AB in 1940.  After graduating from high school in Rolling Hills he attended the newly established Petroleum Technology program at Tech (later known as SAIT) in Calgary.  He then took the opportunity of a lifetime and spent three months in the Arctic with a summer crew conducting a geological survey on Ellesmere Island.  This was followed by a long and satisfying career in the Alberta energy industry until his retirement in 1999.

Joe married Marilyn Steckly in St. Agnes Church in Carstairs, AB on July 21, 1962 and they spent many happy years together raising their children and pursuing their work and interests, primarily in Calgary.

Joe loved to work with his hands and kept a fleet of vehicles running for family and friends.  He was especially fond of working on old Volvos.  He was also fond of Model Ts and a proud member of the First Alberta Two Cylinder Club.  When not fixing or restoring mechanical things he liked working with wood and building things, and he contributed to many interior and exterior building and construction projects throughout his life.

Although Joe generally preferred work to leisure, there was one notable exception; Joe loved sailing.  After retiring Joe purchased a sailboat with a friend and spent many happy hours sailing in and around Victoria, BC.

Throughout his life, Joe was always generous with his time and skills.  From family to friends to neighbours, he helped people whenever and with whatever they needed.

The last eight years of Joe’s life were spent in the company of his dear friend, Margie McCulloch who brought fun and new experiences into his life, including the opportunity to be “Grandpa Joe” to two of her grandchildren, Avery and Quinn.

Joe spent his final year battling ALS, being lovingly cared for by Margie, a retired Registered Nurse, in her home.  Marilyn, Leslie and David are grateful for the love and care that Margie gave Joe and the happiness that she brought him, and are proud to call her a family friend.

A private graveside service will be held at Queen’s Park Cemetery on June 29, 2021 with The Rev. Colin O’Rourke presiding.

In living memory of Joe, a tree will be planted in the Ann & Sandy Cross Conservation Area by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Crowfoot, 82 CROWFOOT CIRCLE NW, CALGARY, AB T3G 2T3, Telephone: 403-241-0044.
