Obituary of Maria SMUSZKO

August 6, 1933 – Labaschka, Poland
June 30, 2021 – Calgary, Alberta

Maria Smuszko passed away on Wednesday, June 30, 2021 at the age of 87 years.

Maria was born in Labaschka, Poland, on August 6, 1933. She moved to Calgary, Alberta, in 1958 to live with her cousins, Maria and Herbert Golibrzuch, to start her new life in Canada.

Maria worked as a baker most of her life and eventually owned her own bakery, Stadium Bakery, which she retired from. 

Maria married Walter Smuszko in Calgary on October 7, 1960, and together they had four children. 

She was an active member of St. Boniface and St. Bernard Churches, and was a member of their choir. Maria was very spiritual and the church was a large part of her life. 

Maria was happiest when surrounded by her large family and many friends. Whether camping, a backyard BBQ, or celebrating the traditional holidays, the bigger the group, the more she enjoyed it.

Maria is survived by her daughter Marian Lyttle, and her three sons, Allan and wife Jitka, Brent and wife Loree, Jerry and wife Deanne,  all of Calgary, Alberta. Maria has eight grandchildren: Jordan and Austin (Allan), Courtney, Brady and Haley (Brent), Noah, Wyatt and Addison (Jerry), all of Calgary Alberta. 

Maria is also survived by her brother Hans Orlowski of Gutersloh, Germany, and sisters, Helen Bryk of Calgary and Liz Mendonza (Vince) of Calgary, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. 

Maria was predeceased by her husband, Walter Smuszko, her son-in-law Paul Lyttle, her brothers, Joseph Orlowski and Adam Orlowski; and recently her close cousin, Maria Golibrzuch, who passed away on January 31 this year.

Relatives and friends are invited to Prayers and Tributes at St. Boniface Catholic Church (1923 Broadview Rd. NW, Calgary, AB)    on Monday, July 5, 2021 at 7:00 p.m.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, July 6, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Boniface Catholic Church (1923 Broadview Rd. NW, Calgary, AB)   Graveside Service to follow at Queen’s Park Cemetery. Reception to follow at the Village Event Centre (4039 Brentwood Rd. NW Calgary, AB) at 4:30 p.m.  Condolences, memories and photos can also be shared and viewed here.
