Margriet Wijnen

Obituary of Margriet Wijnen

February 28, 1944 – Helmond, Netherlands
August 8, 2021 – Calgary, Alberta

Margriet Wijnen, born in Helmond, The Netherlands, to Anton Wijnen and Zus Raaymakers, passed away in Calgary, Alberta, on Sunday, August 8, 2021.

Trained as an electroencephalograph technologist, Margriet brought her skills to Canada in 1972, working first at the Sunnybrook Hospital in Toronto. Tom Van Dijk, her high school friend and the love of her life, soon followed her. In 1978, the couple moved to Calgary, where Margriet continued her EEG career at the Foothills Hospital for the next 25 years. She was also an enthusiastic volunteer. Her great love for her adopted country was associated with Canada’s part in liberating Holland during the Second World War. Thus Margriet, Tom, and their dog Max visited the Colonel Belcher Hospital on weekends, bringing their friendship and laughter to the war veterans.

Margriet was an attentive listener with an excellent memory, and a friendly gardener who shared flowers with her neighbours. She loved reading, classical music, and the songs of Leonard Cohen. She and Tom also enjoyed traveling, sometimes with her sister Annelies. In addition to visiting family and friends in Holland, they traveled to southern and eastern Europe, saw every Canadian province except Newfoundland, and made trips to Mexico, South America, and the Galapagos Islands.

She is mourned by her love and lifetime companion Tom, their extended families in Holland, and her colleagues and friends. Margriet was predeceased by her parents, her sister Annelies Wijnen, and her brother Wim Wijnen.

In accordance with Margriet’s wishes, there will be no funeral service. Condolences, memories and photos may also be shared and viewed here.

In living memory of Margriet Wijnen, a tree will be planted in the Ann & Sandy Cross Conservation Area by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Crowfoot, 82 CROWFOOT CIRCLE NW, CALGARY, AB T3G 2T3, Telephone: 403-241-0044.
