Obituary of Margaret COOKE

August 11, 2021 – Calgary, Alberta

Peggy Cooke of Calgary, AB, passed away on Wednesday, August 11, 2021 at the age of 96 years.

Peggy was born in Moncton, NB to George H. and Fanny Doane Strachan. She grew up with one sister, Frances. When she finished high school, she started her career of life-long caregiving by taking care of her parents.  Three years later she married Arthur B. Cooke and she took care of him. Her son David arrived a few years later. After the death of her father, she had her mother move in and she took care of her for sixteen years. Later she took care of her husband as he aged and was always there to help out with the grandchildren. When Arthur passed away in 2005, Peggy was unemployed for the first time in her life. After that it was her turn to be taken care of.

She was an active member of the Altar Guild at Holy Nativity Church, Calgary as well as St. George's Church and The Church of the Good Shepherd, both in Montreal. She was a lover of flowers, children, dogs and the British Royal Family.

Peggy loved to entertain. She would always make two casseroles at a time, one for dinner and one to put in the deep freeze in case someone dropped in. During the forty years the family spent in Montreal, the house was always a stop for family and friends travelling to Ontario from the Maritimes and back. During Expo 67, she stayed home and welcomed sixty-five different families over the six months of the exposition.

On August 11, she went to join her beloved husband of fifty-eight years, Arthur, in heaven. Peggy leaves behind one son David and her beloved daughter-in -law Jeannie Chateauneuf, her grandchildren, Steven, Amanda (Moritz) and Kayleigh; as well as several nieces and nephews including many friends and family in eastern Canada, South Africa, and England.

Many thanks to the staff at McKenzie Towne Continuing Care for their loving and compassionate care of Peggy during the last nine years.

Funeral Services will be held at Holy Nativity Anglican Church (12707 Bonaventure Drive S.E., Calgary, AB) on Wednesday, August 18, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. Graveside Service to follow at Eden Brook Memorial Gardens.Condolences, memories and photos can also be shared and viewed here.
