Obituary of Dan "Danny" Hunt

HUNT, Daniel Patrick

March 17, 1951 – August 12, 2021

“409” Dan has set out on his last cruise in the Chevy, shifting those gears one last time.  After a short-lived but hard fought battle with amyloidosis and multiple myeloma, Dan surrendered his soul and spirit to a higher power, passing away peacefully at home in his sleep, as he had wished.

Born in Teulon, Manitoba to James and Audrey Hunt, Dan’s childhood years were spent in Redcliff and Medicine Hat, Alberta, moving to Calgary in 1964. Apprenticing at the age of 15, Dan was a skilled and meticulous sheet metal mechanic and welder with high standards for his trade and unaccepting of mediocrity. He was well known and respected in the industry for his attention to detail and quality workmanship and proud of his work on many Calgary buildings and landmarks as well as tin and wheel tub work on many race cars. Always a “Chevy” man, Dan had a passion for cars and anything to do with cars, particularly race cars and car racing, spending his leisure time on any project that involved tearing down or rebuilding engines, rear ends, transmissions, carburetors, or any other movable part. This gifted him with many friends over the years with the same interest and opportunities for constant banter and dialogue. In recent years, his classic old muscle cars became his interest and he was always proud to display his 63 Chev at car shows.

Dan married his teenage sweetheart and chief pit crew, Dawn, on August 11, 1973 and just celebrated 48 years as life partners and best friends. He will be remembered by many for his strong work ethic, dry sense of humor, plaid shirts and suspenders, love of Kahlua and his sanctuary in the “Man Cave”. Never one to admit a weakness for animals, he had a fondness for Mac, Bailey and Oreo.

With Dawn, mourning his loss are his brother Jim (Gail) Hunt and their children, Rob, Michelle and Nancy and their families, half sister Brenda (Hans) Neumann and family, step sisters Diana, Donna and Edie and families, sister-in-law Laurie (Aby) Martten  and their children Adam and Lindsay (Kevin) and their family and father-in-law Barry Williams along with many cousins, in-laws and lifelong  friends. Dan was predeceased by his parents, grandparents and “favorite” mother-in-law, Sharon Williams.

Heartfelt gratitude is extended to his health care teams at PLC, FMC, TBCC and Didsbury palliative home care for their persistent and optimistic efforts to support us in this difficult journey. A man of few words and intolerant of much fanfare, no funeral service will be held but a Celebration of Life will be planned for a future date. In lieu of flowers, please consider honoring his memory with an act of kindness or hugging someone you love. Condolences, memories and photos may be shared and viewed here.

In living memory of Dan Hunt, a tree will be planted in the Ann & Sandy Cross Conservation Area.
