Condolences
I was a colleague of Peggy's at Mount Royal from when I was hired in the early seventies to when she retired. All of us who knew her will always remember her strong personality, deeply-held principles and fierce intelligence. However, I was delighted to see another, softer side of her when my husband and I went on a trail ride in the late seventies and found, to our surprise, that Peggy and her daughter, Betsy, were on it, too. During that week, I saw a loving mother who'd done a fabulous job of raising her children essentially alone. My deep condolences to all her large family for your loss.
I have had the privilege of being a part of book club with Peggy for several years. Over the years she has shared her knowledge and passion for literature with us. She was a vibrant, amazing woman who continued to share her vast knowledge of literature. I know I am a better person (and better reader) for having known Peggy. Her presence will be greatly missed but the knowledge she has shared and her passion will remain within us.
Peggy hired me to teach French at Mount Royal College in 1969, when the campus was still downtown. At the time, she was juggling teaching duties with family responsibilities, and she also published a weekly column in the Albertan newspaper. After I had put in a year working full time as a sessional instructor, she declared in her well-known very strong voice that anyone doing a full time job should be offered tenure! In following years, I was often the recipient of her support and generosity.
Peggy had a very strong social conscience, and made everyone aware of it! She served in several positions on the Mount Royal Faculty Association, and participated actively in academic life at Mount Royal (including teaching courses in Latin!)
Peggy was very generous toward me in my teaching career, and she and Betsy attended my wedding to Jean Claude in 1972. Jean Claude and I have kept touch with Peggy sporadically over the years. She will be fondly remembered.
Here's hoping, for Peggy's sake, that I haven't made any spelling or grammar errors! Marianne Beauvilain
