Carola BARRINGTON (nee Mogck)

Obituary of Carola Christel BARRINGTON (nee Mogck)

June 10, 1954 - Winnipeg, Manitoba
August 31, 2021 - Calgary, Alberta

Carola Barrington, beloved wife of Ben Barrington of Calgary, AB, passed away on Tuesday, August 31, 2021 at the age of 67 years.

As a child of only ten, Carola travelled post war with her parents on a ship from Canada to Seelze, Germany. In her formidable early school years she embraced German philosophy and culture. Of her many fond memories of youth in Germany, attending her first Beatles concert with close friends in Hamburg before the band went mainstream, topped the list. She always gravitated towards the vibrant and progressive music, art and fashion trends in Germany, never missing a beat. In her late twenties, because of her accelerated gift for languages, she was enticed by the German consulate in Canada to come to work for them in translating diplomatic documents. Excited by the idea of returning to her birth land Canada, she jumped at the chance and landed in Vancouver. It was here in Vancouver (on a setupdate) that she met Ben Barrington, an up-and-coming architect. They married in 1980, and welcomed their first child, a daughter, Marisa Christel, and later a son, Patrick. Four years later, in 1994, the Barrington clan of four moved to Ben’s hometown of Calgary to join his brother Reto and Annette and their extended families. Upon landing in Alberta, Carola applied her pathos and empathy by working at an old age care facility, building loving relationships with many in their final years. She was well loved and had a gift to be sure. In Carola’s home and personal style, she flourished, giving her guests a taste of European traditions and culture. She was a purveyor of simple design and commitment to family rituals, true to her German roots. No one left hungry after a party at the Barrington’s. As a mother, she brought the warmth of German tradition to every Christmas, thoughtfully crafting the family’s advent calendars, stockings and presents from Santa. The last four years were tough on Carola as she was a fighter until the end. Although we knew she could not win her battle forever, we were all there at the end. Finally, peace for you, our friend and mother. The family wishes to thank all friends and medical staff that made Carola’s end journey a significant transition. There will be no funeral, but a celebration of life will be held at a later date.

Carola is survived by her husband, Ben Barrington of Calgary, daughter Marisa and granddaughter, Alina of Calgary, and son Patrick of Vancouver, BC. Carola was predeceased by her parents, Inge and Hugo Mogck who died in Seelze, Germany.
