Obituary of Lawrence David Arthurs

July 30, 1931 – Sifton, Manitoba
August 30, 2021 - Calgary, Alberta

It is with deep sorrow and love that we mourn the passing of Larry Arthurs of Calgary on Monday, August 30, 2021 at the age of 90.

Larry was born in Sifton, MB to William and Violet. He excelled in mathematics in grade school, leading him to attend the University of Manitoba where he earned a Degree in Civil Engineering in 1954. During his university years he joined the Royal Canadian Naval Reserve’s University Naval Training Division and served his country with postings in far away places such as Hawaii, Mexico, and Alaska.
Larry went on to have a successful career as a pipeline engineer beginning with Imperial Oil, then Dome Petroleum, and finally Enbridge. He was highly respected by his colleagues for his professional expertise, and well liked for his dry sense of humour.

From the early 1960s, Larry and his young family travelled widely, from the Northwest Territories to Indonesia where they lived for three years. Upon returning to Canada they lived in the Toronto area, and later relocated to Calgary. In the late 1980s Larry moved to Edmonton where he eventually retired. Larry’s world travels gave him a taste for exotic cuisine, particularly the hot and spicy varieties. His appreciation of jazz and swing music was evident in his sizeable record collection. His hobbies included stamp collecting and photography. He was a great sports fan and always loved to watch hockey and football games on TV. He also enjoyed fishing, golfing and playing cribbage - often engaged in intense battles with his sons, which included plenty of laughter.

Larry is lovingly remembered by his children, James William Arthurs (Sarah), Kelly Leigh LeBlanc (Jon), and Daniel Barry Arthurs (Tracy); grandchildren, Christopher Daniel Arthurs (Faith, with great-granddaughter Liria Sylvie Crossen Arthurs), Benjamin James Arthurs, and Hannah Marguerite Sena Arthurs; the mother of his children, Colleen Elizabeth Arthurs, his sister LeBeau Harrow, his brother James Willard Arthurs, close friend Colin Duncan, and by friends and staff at Manor Village At Huntington Hills and at Staywell Manor Village.

A Virtual Memorial Service will be held on Monday, October 4, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. All are welcome (see Zoom link below). In lieu of flowers or gifts, if friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made in Larry’s name directly to the Canadian Cancer Society, 200 – 325 Manning Rd. N.E., Calgary, AB T2E 2P5 Telephone: (403) 205-3966, email donorservices@cancer.ab.ca, or to your favourite charity. Condolences, memories and photos can also be shared and viewed here.
