Dear Margot, Peter, Alec and Stephen (and spouses)
I first met your dad in late 1953 and coincidently met your grandfather at about the same time. I was a clueless new rookie working for Royal Securities Corp in Montreal and we had a common meeting room on the 6th floor of the RSC building on St. James Street. Montreal Engineering occupied the fifth floor and we all co-mingled for lunch. I was a fly on the wall and I remember listening with awe as your dad argues and discussed with a fellow confrere named Con Mullheron engineering problems and such. (I could not add at all to the discussion but just listened intently.)
Your grandfather came from New Brunswick at Christmas time for the annual meeting of RSC and we rookies acted as bird dogs and messengers for the managers and directors.
I didn’t know your mum yet but did so in 1957 when Mufty and I were moved to Calgary to begin my sales career with RSC. They were so kind to us as we didn’t know a soul and they were so helpful in introducing us to others and the things you have to learn in a new community, like new doctors etc. (Any of you remember Dr. Chisholm?)
What became really fun was introducing us to you kids and the following ski trips and get togethers. We were privileged to host Colin many times when he was at the U of A. here in Edmonton. He became a big brother to our kids, (especially Wendy, who was going through an awful age 13 and Colin was really helpful.)
Whenever your mum travelled to Edmonton with your dad they took us out to dinner which allowed us to catch up. All in all they became good friends and confidants throughout our Calgary days and beyond.
We’ll miss them as undoubtedly you will too but memories will abound and we’ll revel in the joy of having known them and becoming good friends. We will undoubtedly cross paths in the future and when we do, we will remember.
Most Sincerely,
Bill Mathewson…………and Mufty too!

I send heartfelt condolences to the Williams family. Marshall had an amazing run at life on this plane! My husband and I enjoyed many happy times with Marshall and Joan. Marshall could ski rings around us and walk more quickly than any of us. I loved his smile and it was always ready to warmly greet friends. Marshall has joined Joan and together they'll explore the next stage in their soul's evolution. They're happy and at peace but it's so difficult for those left behind. I know this from the recent death of my husband.
Light, Strengh and courage and happy memories
Margot
Very sad to read/hear of Marshall's passing. Had the opportunity to work at TransAlta during the last 6-7 years of his tenure as CEO/Chairman.
Also had the opportunity to congratulate him in person on the Hon Degree at Dalhousie University in Halifax.
I told him then and my opinion has not changed today.......he was one of those rare leaders who believed/practiced & built a culture of Honesty/ Integrity / and Hard work.....from the Top down.
RIP Marshall........you will be missed terribly.
On behalf of myself and the Board of Governors, Foundation Board, staff, alumni and friends of Banff Centre, we are so sad to hear of Marshall’s passing.
Marshall loved the arts and was a true community builder. His passion for culture and the mountains were perfectly matched on the side of Sacred Buffalo Guardian Mountain to allow for his longstanding relationship with Banff Centre as a participant, faculty, patron, and Board of Governors service from 1987-1991. Banff Centre benefitted from his leadership as he took the role of Chairman in the early 90’s leading Banff Centre through a significant growth period in the institution’s history. His named endowment has supported hundreds and hundreds of artists in all disciplines and he will be remembered as a builder and architect of one of the foremost expansionary times in Banff Centre’s history leading to the creation of the TransCanada PipeLine Pavilion, Professional Development Centre, hospitality supports and namely the renowned Music & Sound building as well as opening the Paul D. Fleck Library and Archives. A fourth division, the Centre for Mountain Culture, was established during his tenure as Chairman.
Please accept our deepest condolences for your family and friends as you mourn the passing of a truly great friend to us and a community builder for Canada.

I send my deepest condolences to the Williams family and extended families. Marshall was the best CEO I ever worked under, and I am grateful to have had the opportunity early in my career at Calgary Power/TransAlta. His respect for all people, his wisdom, and impeccable integrity were unmatched and set the standard for what a great business leader should be!
While we mourn Marshall’s passing, I celebrate the many mentoring opportunities he afforded me --- as he did to so many people in our working career…not just at Calgary Power / TransAlta but even beyond that time frame. On Day Two of being hired at CPL, Marshall shared a couple of his guiding principles that forever stick with you and that you shared with others: “If you tell the truth, you never have to remember what you said” and “Always be mindful that what you do for one customer, be prepared to do for 400,000.”
Nancy and I enjoyed our social interactions with Marsh and Joan, in particular the time in our back yard when they tutored our neighbours in the fine art of eating lobster!
Sincere condolences to Marshall’s family. His life was the epitome of all great values in our society. He led by example guided by principle. He improved our world by taking the time to impact so many lives….just one of the immeasurable legacies he leaves.
My condolences to Marsh's family and to all who knew and loved him. Indeed he was a "consummate gentleman." His manner and personality reflected the more "Victorian" flavour of the NS culture in and by which he was formed. A culture Calgary still had when he arrived. While Calgary and Alberta changed, March never lost that deeply personal touch, grounded in the rock of integrity. When we created the Capitalizing on Change project, he understood the need and committed ATB's support. More, he befriended me and gave me hours of his time for long adventurous conversations. I am deeply thankful he was in my life.
Dear Peter and Family,
Reading your comments about your father was like reading a page from the many history books about Alberta. What a wonderful man who accomplished so much, but his greatest legacy will undoubtedly be his loving family. Deepest condolences from our family to yours at this difficult time.
