Obituary of Gary Hughes

December 20, 1932 - Regina, Saskatchewan
September 10, 2021 - Calgary, Alberta

Gary Hughes, beloved husband of Isabella Hughes (nee Przemus) passed away on Friday, September 10, 2021 at the age of 88.

In 1957, Gary won the NCAA hockey championship playing defence for Colorado College where he graduated with a B.Sc. in Geology with a minor in Philosophy. His passion for hockey and living life to the fullest led him to Europe where he met Isabella while coaching the Polish National Olympic hockey team from 1963-1966. Gary’s hockey career as a coach-player took them throughout Europe for 10 years. He returned to Canada to start his career as a professional geologist and went on to own a wellsite supervision company. He loved golf and cherished the many friends he made as a forty-three-year member at the Willow Park Golf and Country Club.

Gary loved life and always looked on the bright side. He will be most remembered for being a devoted husband, proud father, loyal friend, and fun-loving grandpa. He was an all-around good guy - humble, gentle, and kind, yet tough and determined to the very end.

Besides his loving wife of fifty-eight years, Isabella, Gary is survived by his cherished daughter Jackie and son-in-law Jarrett Flegel; his grandchildren, Carter and Cassie who were the light of his life; and his loyal brother Don Hughes (Kerstin). Gary was predeceased by his brother Keith Hughes (Pat), and his parents, Frank and Hilda Hughes.
