Obituary of Steven William Harty

August 14, 1925 – Shaunavon, Saskatchewan
September 15, 2021 – Calgary, Alberta

Steve William Harty of Calgary, AB, went to be with his Saviour on Wednesday, September 15, 2021 at the age of 96 years.

Steve was a loving and devoted husband to Grace, father to Anne-Marie (John) Froese, step-father to Tony (Erica) Rice, Steven Rice, and step-grandfather to five, Tiffany (Trevor) Allain, JT Rice, Chantal (Mario) Delgado, Alaysha Rice and Ashton Rice.

Steve was born in Shaunavon, SK, and was the youngest of nine children. The family moved to many small towns throughout the prairies and BC; some of which are now considered ghost towns. He often said they were a family of travelling gypsies.

Steve was proud to have served in the Canadian Army in WWII as a military police with the occupational forces in Holland. After returning from duty, he lived in High River and worked at the General Hardware Store and then sold Singer Sewing Machines door to door. He moved to Calgary in 1954 and pursued his career in the sewing machine industry. His love of sales and people led him to build a very successful sewing machine business, the first of which opened in 1977, with three retail outlets, which he owned and operated for thirteen years. In recognition of his sales achievements he was rewarded with incentive trips to many places around the world.

Steve was very active, from hunting to skiing, surfing to trap shooting and even ran in the Calgary Herald Road Races but his passion was golf. His love of golf earned him many trophies well into his senior years. Steve was always ready to help someone at a moments notice and his dry sense of humour and quick wit brought a smile and laugh to many. He loved to travel, California and Barbados being his favourite destinations but he was happiest when spending time with family and friends.

Steve is survived by one sister Pearl Fenwick and many extended family and friends. He was predeceased by his parents, John and Anna Marie Harty, one brother Frank and six sisters, Frances Nicoll, Jeanette Thompson, Marie Palmer, Bertha Anderson, Catherine Ewing, and Dorothy Molnar. Steve was a very special man and will be loving remembered and sadly missed and all are blessed to have had him in their lives.

A COVID restricted, private family Celebration of Steve's life will be held on Monday, September 27, 2021 at 10:30 a.m. Family and friends who are unable to attend the Celebration of Life in person are invited to join Steve’s service streamed live (see below) on the day of the service.
