Obituary of Allan George Sweetser

It is with mixed sadness and peace that we announce the passing of Allan Sweetser of Calgary, AB passed away on Saturday, September 25, 2021 at the age of 70 years.

Allan was born on September 10, 1951 in Swan River, MB and settled in Alberta to make it his home; first living in Edmonton before settling in Calgary. Allan was an early campaigner for LGBTQ2SA rights, involved with a various groups, educating the public on HIV/AIDS and the LGBTQ2SA community. He has been a strong supporter of animal protection groups especially the MEOW Foundation. He was an advocate for green spaces and community gardens in urban areas. 

Allan was heavily involved in the art and home décor community here in Calgary working for many years surrounded by a creative community that brought him joy and constant inspiration. He loved to travel, especially to Hawaii, Disney Parks, and Cruising. 

Besides his loving partner of fifteen years, Larry Demars, Allan is survived by his brother Leonard, and sisters, Loretta and Leona; A firm believer in the strength of chosen family, Allan leaves behind a large network; both local and around the world, whom he always held close to his heart. This list is too long to name, a testament to his character. He loved you all and remains in our hearts.

A Celebration of Allan’s life will be held at a later date, as per Allan’s wishes no formal Memorial Service will be held. In lieu of flowers and gifts, please consider a donation to your local animal shelter and promoters of green spaces, plant a tree. Or when you travel take a moment at a beautiful or inspiring location and think of Allan, and you will soon feel he is enjoying it with you.
