Obituary of Christon Irving Archer

August 24, 1940 – Victoria, British Columbia
December 19, 2021 – Calgary, Alberta

Christon Irving Archer, beloved husband of 56 years of Carol Archer (nee Hewison), of Calgary, AB, passed away early in the morning on Sunday, December 19, 2021 at the age of 81 years.

Chris was born in Victoria, BC on August 24, 1940, and spent his youth on Vancouver Island. He attended the University of Victoria where he earned his Bachelor of Arts degree. He received his M.A. and Ph.D. at the State University of New York at Stoneybrook.

Chris enjoyed a long career at the University of Calgary as a professor in the Department of History. He was well respected in his field, published widely, and was popular with his students. His research interests in Latin American studies led to travel in Spain, Mexico, Peru, Argentina, the United States, and Australia. He was often accompanied by his wife Carol, his favourite research assistant and best friend. A born raconteur, Chris will be remembered for his love of family, his irrepressible sense of humour, and his gift for friendship. His passing leaves an immeasurable emptiness in our lives.

Besides his loving wife Carol, he is survived by daughter Katherine (Lars), son John (Christin), and grandchildren, Erik, James, Elin, Cate and Sara. He is also survived by sister Lynne (David), and brother Darrel (Anthea), as well as numerous nieces and nephews and extended family. He was predeceased by his parents, John Rolfe Archer and Mary Frances Palliser.

A private family service has already taken place. There will be a Celebration of Life at a later date. Condolences, memories and photos may be shared and viewed here. If friends so desire, in lieu of flowers, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Alberta, 200, 119 – 14th Street N.W., Calgary, AB T2N 1Z6 Telephone: (403) 264-5549, www.heartandstroke.ca.

In living memory of Christon Irving Archer, a tree will be planted in the Ann & Sandy Cross Conservation Area.
